Article source: in situ studio A thin carport roof extension and new front stair and entry deck make a blocky existing house more delicate. The project involved removing a poorly-built sunroom on the east side of the house and replacing it with a carport.
The main level was opened to a single space wrapping around a large brick fireplace. Bedrooms were refinished, including a complete reconfiguration of the master bathroom. The basement was reorganized to move mechanical and laundry spaces to the rear of the house, by the existing garage, and to create a potentially autonomous living suite. The stair between the two levels was flipped to descend north, opening the entire basement to light from above. A thin deck wraps the front of the house to provide a lighter stance on the site. A wall dividing the main living space from the kitchen was removed to create one large public that wraps around an existing central fireplace. An undersized, failing roof structure was reinforced with flat steel straps attached to the underside of the roof beams. New casework objects and slatted screens complement the mass of the fireplace. The master bedroom ceiling was vaulted, and the master bathroom was reorganized to create a large, skylit shower that floods the bedroom with natural light. An existing stair was flipped to create immediate access to the lower level from the entry and, aided by a new skylight, provide light to the darkest edge of the walk-out basement. On one side of the new stair, a slatted guardrail extends into the basement to create a physical connection between upstairs and down. The rear exterior was cleaned up, and all windows replaced. New landscaped areas, site walls, and stairs circumambulate the house, creating a series of spaces for outdoor living and vehicular access. The master bedroom has a small private deck and yard. The basement entry is protected by a thin new awning. Contact in situ studio
