The property has been transformed, as was the life of the couple who own it: this interior theme portrays harmony through contrasting colours; it reflects the passage that the owners experienced in their transition from a couple to a family, the union of two contrasting colours creating a balance, the Tao of their life.

Life changed around the union of the black and white balance.

The design created two identical houses where only one had stood: originally the building was a single, family house, it is now split vertically into two three-bedroomed houses on three levels, each with a basement for utility and garaging use, a ground floor living room and kitchen and a first floor with 3 bedrooms. Each level is designed for its time of day and activity.

The room environments are characterised by white vertical surfaces decorated with special satin wall paint that gives a soft velvet touch. The contrasting floors of jet black stained oak against the clean, formal easy lines of the walls, broken in intervals of natural “chaos”, by occasional pieces of custom-made furniture, designed by the architect, all add further contrasts of strong opposites that create unite to produce harmony.

The deeply minimal theme of this project was achieved not only by the colours but also the style, with its roots in aesthetic, even archaic imagery. The stark minimal aspects creating a feeling of extreme inner strength and the ability to transform.

Yin and yang, influencing the contrast of colour, texture and shape, traditional lines against contemporary treatments and the use of opposites to create harmonious environments for family-living.
