We planned the house for a family with small children in a residential area in Kobe City.

We had to keep both privacy and daylighting for the family because they were concerned about line of sight from other houses which are located in sloping tiers. We designed dual roofs structure, the floating roof and the lower roof. Outer walls cover the house like curtains which are hanged from the floating roof. Alley Terrace connects from the south side into the house inside. This structure makes enough ventilation and daylighting.

Main post which sticks out of the floating roof is firmly fixed in the lower roof to prevent the post from buckling. And the hanged outer walls also prevent the house from being twisted.

We tried to reduce sensation of oppression from the house by some unique design below.

– weaken presence of the floating roof by making the edge extremely thin

– outer wall which is like hanged from the floating roof

– the 1st floor level which is dug down the ground for easy approach from street

– façade which has a lightness such as the one-storied house

We designed the lower roof which is covered by thin and broad floating roof like a fragile one with using translucent material for that natural lighting can reach into the house. So that when people look at the ceiling you can feel indirect daylight brightly and transition of daylight which is caused by time, weather and etc.

In addition people can enjoy full panoramic view from children’s room on the 2nd floor which is jutted out from the lower roof. At the 1st floor people can overlook each room which is connected through the alley terrace. That design gives opening feeling for client family. When the louver door is closed, family can keep their privacy and security.

The floating roof can cut line of sight from neighbors and shade from the strong sunshine in summer. The alley terrace which connects into the house between the floating and the lower roof can entrain the warm sunshine in winter. And it gives good ventilation throughout all seasons.

In addition, we set a fan with thermal sensor on top of high ceiling in the living room which effectively works exhausting heat in summer. The design realize comfort indoor thermal environment without air conditioning facilities.
