There are only a few old townhouses remain. Even though the façade of new apartment buildings in this area follow the landscape regulation, they don’t seem to make an essential contribution to surrounding scenery and community.

In this project, we considered how JURAKU RO contribute to locals and creates new Kyoto’s landscape.

Open Space in the Town

On top of its major function as a rental apartment, Café and hotel are located on the ground floor next to piloti and grass parking lots, where many and unspecified persons can be accommodated. It provides multi-functional open space for residents and locals to organize local activities.

Stereoscopic Traditional House

DOMA is one of the important elements in Kyoto’s traditional house. It provides access with light and wind in an elongated closed space and interconnects outdoor and indoor space allowing us to walk through inside of house with our shoes on.

After passing through Noren (fabric wall hanging) at the entrance of JURAKU RO, you may see DOMA that spread itself towards back of the building. Each flat is connecting to this corridor and enjoys Doma attached to the inner garden where residents can experience this space in the room. We created a unique structure with full of Kyoto’s traditional house element by piling Doma and inner garden on top of one another.

Customized Rental Apartment

Each flat is composed of three rooms -Doma, Main room and a bathroom. The ductworks are exposed and the partition between main room and the bathroom made with concrete block. No storage or drawer, but just one big space. Usually rental apartment is furnished as if their lifestyle is expected to be similar to others.

The city Landscape

The finish of exterior wall of JURAKU RO is a black. You may find it unusual to see the black building standing in the small town, however this color is originated from the old castle ‘JURAKU DAI’. As a memory of this site, we built a modern black architecture where JURAKU DAI is once a symbol of prosperity.
