Coolidge House in Los Angeles, California by MOLINA DESIGN S.A.S

The project is located on a residential street in a traditional sector of Los Angeles (Mar Vista) at a distance of 4 miles from Venice Beach. The neighborhood consists of single-family houses, mostly single-story, with the typology of southern California houses: porch, sloping ceilings, façade materials with wood and stucco coatings, demarcation of the main access, among others.
The proposal of our office is to design a contemporary house within a defined traditional sector of the city of Los Angeles, while taking into account the following aspects:
For the urban context, the proposal is to conserve the predominant scale of the neighborhood (a single floor) and with elements related to the typology of the neighborhood such as the porch and the façade materials. The combination of sloping roof and flat roof was included to continue with our philosophy of showing a structure with basic, modern lines without losing its housing character.
In terms of the distribution of spaces, we propose a garage connected to the house and its open concept permitting the house to be more connected to the street; with greater maximization of the land and allowing the back to be solely used as a recreational area. The two rooms and the access to the house are located on the main facade and the kitchen, living room and main room on the rear facade. In the social area, the height from floor to ceiling is increased to have a modern clerestory to facilitate for the natural light to illuminate the home and also to differentiate social areas from private ones.
In the environmental aspect, the main premises were to make maximum use of natural light (natural lighting inside the spaces by means of large, well-ventilated windows and the use of solar collectors), a good connection between the house and the land. In addition, a good selection of natural and recyclable materials and ventilation of the house (cross ventilation to avoid accumulation of toxic gases within it).
