Article source: Powerhouse Company Powerhouse Company creates three iconic towers in Leiden The sustainable residential towers for the people of Leiden, The Netherlands will be built along the Willem de Zwijgerlaan. The design consists of a unique mix of approximately 560 apartments—ranging from 45 to 200 m2—including 25% social housing. The ambitious project will not only provide a diverse range of housing for a multigenerational population, but also express the future of sustainable urbanization in the city of Leiden.
LEAD is characterized by three different heights that seamlessly connect to the existing urban landscape. The buildings along the Willem de Zwijgerlaan have an ascending urban skyline that continues naturally with LEAD. The slender solitary tower—with an impressive height of 115 meters—forms the final peace of the urban wall. Because of the different heights in the plan, ample space is created for a welcoming city park. The ground floor will house supporting facilities for the neighborhood with spacious bicycle parking and a two-story underground parking garage. Sustainable urbanization for everyone The city of Leiden has clear and ambitious goals for sustainability; to be climate neutral by 2035. LEAD strongly aligns with Leiden’s ambition for sustainable urbanization by meeting BENG standards and adopting the goals defined by the municipal sustainability program: energy, biodiversity, climate, waste, entrepreneurship and mobility. Focused on sustainable and inclusive housing and the quality of life, LEAD offers future residents a thriving community to live comfortably. By providing a diverse range of housing types, LEAD meets the different needs and budgets of future residents. With an ideal location and proximity to transportation and facilities, LEAD is optimal for families, students, seniors, starters and expats. Expansion of the park increases the quality of life A successful public space can be fully realized when a high level of ambition is distributed across the entire scope of the project. For LEAD, this is achieved by strategically positioning parking facilities for cars and bikes—out of site yet easily accessible—in order to make optimal use of the beautiful public park. The plan also includes green rooftop terraces, providing additional lush outdoor spaces for the residents of LEAD. The green design of the building and landscape ensures a connection with the existing green structure and adds biodiversity to the city. LEAD’s quality of living will also be present in the common areas. For example, corridors are designing as large indoor atria, where natural light illuminates the space from above. Construction of LEAD will start in the Summer of 2019. Contact Powerhouse Company
