Article source: Baran Studio ArchItecture Located at, 3030 Chapman, Gallot Lofts is a multi-family residential building. I believe the project would be interesting to readers as it presents a context uncommonly found in architecture publications, it is an example of a unique design strategy at the rough edges of what some consider to be a rough city. The project is located in Jingletown, a neighborhood at the edge of East Oakland, CA. which is at the geographical and theoretical center of the Bay Area housing crisis. The city of Oakland is rapidly growing due to housing cost pressure from San Francisco, and projects of this type are springing up throughout the area.
What makes the building unique in this case is the configuration of the mass and skin into elements that allow for open / green space and foster a relationship to the community. The project was the result of our design intent to collaborate with the current neighborhood context, and seeks to integrate into the mixed scales and eclectic history of Jingletown. The massing of the standard housing block is carved apart to allow the insertion of circulation, courtyard, and landscape elements. This action breaks the project up into volumes that integrate with existing scale while providing as many units as the base zoning allows. To connect with the context, landscape elements extend from the public space and common areas onto facades and into private spaces. Finally, inspired by the surrounding community of artists, the skin is a wrap of mosaic color borrowed from their work. Contact Baran Studio ArchItecture
