Acevedo Dental Office in Sant Boi de Llobregat, Spain by YLAB ArquitectosNovember 20th, 2018 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: YLAB Arquitectos Located in a busy street of Sant Boi de Llobregat, a nearby city of Barcelona, this dental office was designed to capture the attention of the pedestrians and cars passing by. The space, an open plan establishment overlooking the street, was rather small for the required program but offered instead a large and well exposed façade. The clients had built their business at a nearby dental office that had become too small and old fashioned. They now wanted a modern clinic that would keep their friendly local character while attracting new clients. A strong and individual corporate image as a competitive argument to differentiate from the franchised dental offices was always a goal.
The design looks for the contrast between a white contemporary technological image and a warm and calm atmosphere that makes the patient´s experience as comfortable as possible. The contemporary character is achieved by an overall white atmosphere with indirect lighting and curved partitions that optimize the layout and create a fluid space. Graphite accents on facades and signage contribute to a strong and sharp image. The warm ambience is accomplished by using warm materials and tones like light oak and warm grey fabric. Functionally there are two different areas that needed a slightly differentiated feeling: the reception area and the dental area. The reception area is formed by the entrance vestibule with the reception, the waiting area and a meeting office. Situated along the façade, this zone’s privacy is preserved by adjustable oak wood slats that provide a warm and quiet atmosphere. A natural light limestone flooring reflects the natural light and an indirect RGB light, integrated into two ceiling light coves, provides an additional warm illumination. The reception desk is a white lacquered custom-made piece of furniture conceived as a central point, enabling control over all the different office spaces. This desk has an adjacent sitting area for short more private conversations. The waiting area at the back end of this space, is comfortably furnished on top of a wool rug for acoustic comfort. The dental area is separated by a curved wall highlighted by a warm indirect white led light at the top. This wall is a white solid partition for the different medical spaces with a transparent glass opening for representative spaces, such as the meeting room and office manager room. This area includes three treatment rooms, a pan, a lab with sterilization and storage room, a private office and a small break room. The exterior elevations stand out for their graphite floor to ceiling windows and façade cladding, integrating top graphite luminous signs with the dental office´s brand new corporate identity. For a stronger overall identity, all corporate elements such as the exterior signs, interior signage and firm logo, were developed together with the architectural image under the direction of YLAB Arquitectos.
