Duplex-Walled Void

The land is a subdivision in the northwest corner, one side of which is on the main street and another side of which is on the newly constructed road.

Because it is surrounded by other subdivisions in the east and the south and faces the roads in the west and the north, it was difficult to design an open space while securing privacy.

Even if it had a large window as common houses do, the space where others’ eyes need to be obstructed by curtains or the like might not be comfortable. Therefore we thought that it might be possible to create a more comfortable and pleasant space by moderately, not completely, separating the interior from the exterior.

We designed it focusing on the \”void\” existing between the outside and the inner space.

We thought of a space that would be closed but open to the surroundings by means of \”a void created between duplex outer walls\”.

In one wall standing between the road and the building is an opening, through which sunlight and breeze are let in. This opening, which is slightly disaligned with the building’s window, secures privacy and creates a comfortable environment.

This void not only secures privacy, but also serves as a flexible space that can be used as a garden, a balcony or an entrance.

By setting an ambiguous space that belongs neither to the interior nor the exterior in the void between the road and the building, we completed a building that would realize an open and comfortable life in which privacy is secured and sunlight and breeze are let in.

This \”void\”, a multipurpose space, serves as part of the living space when it is joined with the living section, and otherwise it serves as an outdoor facility for enjoying gardening.

The spacious and bright living room connected to the garden will offer a peaceful time for the family and they will enjoy a pleasant breeze when the window is opened.

We expect that the proposal of \”Duplex-Walled Void\”, which may look simple, but will bring happiness to the family, will be a new housing model in emerging residential areas.
