The initial objective was to design two houses, in a high slope area in the Mount Washington; Los Angeles downtown area.

The main characteristics that were taken into account for both lots was:

– Topography: These lots have steep slopes, the higher portion of the slopes is located towards the the street (lower sector), in the middle of the lot there is a softer slope area. The vehicular road is located in the lower part of the land and the section of the road is narrow located at the apex of one of the canyons that are on the slopes of Mt. Washington.

Orientation: The orientation was an essential aspect that was taken into account in the design because the hillside where the lots are located is facing north, which causes there to be no direct natural light in the afternoon hours (after 5pm). In the winter where sunlight originates from the south where it is blocked by the hill.

To address the topography of the lot and take advantage of the views, the lower floors were dedicated to office (1st floor) and sleeping quarters(2nd floor), while the highest level to recreational and social areas. This layout of the floor plan allowed for the house to expand into the hillside as the softer slope was near to top. Furthermore, at the third level were the social area was designed, connects directly with the outdoor natural hillside, creating a large enough backyard to include a deck and grass area surrounded by landscape.

To maximize the view of the canyons the first levels were designed closest to the street, garage and office, and upper levels receding into the mountain to open up to the views. Terraces with large sliding doors were added in all levels of the house in order to bring natural light and the mountain views to the interior of the home. A natural illuminated staircase serves as the spinal cord of the home, shifting in multiple angles to incorporate the views when traveling from lower to upper levels of the home. In addition, to improve the orientation of the home, each floor rotates in its central axis until reaching the upper social area where it is completely turned to an angle and facing the canyon and eastside views.

The main living area consists of one big room on one side with three sides incorporating floor to ceiling windows that bring the canyons and mountain hillside indoors. There are no hallways, traditional closets or nooks visible to close off the space; all modern living activities are enjoyed in this loft like living space. In order to include such as expansive use of glass, large steel columns and beams where were incorporated to allow the space to be completely unobstructed.
