Article source: 02Arch In a recently renewed “vecchia Milano” context, the project completely transforms the interior layout of the apartment re-organizing the spaces and making them wide and open, keeping the structural parts and the staircase in its original position. The owners – he is a programmer, she works in the publishing industry – have a special taste that reflects in their home.
At ground level there is a large living area with a study corner by the window and an open kitchen with a window wall; the pantry is hidden and integrated in the furnishing. The design had to cope with an irregular shell, so drywall systems and tailored pieces of furniture were made in order to reorganize the main rooms and make the most out the existing spaces. At first floor there is a large bedroom with a small balcony and a large bathroom with shower and bathtub; natural light easily enters the rooms through a Velux window system. At basement level there is a large service area dedicated to laundry, ironing and storage. An oak parquet with urban-style running pose is used throughout the apartment. The service rooms are characterized by the use of “cementine”, a typical Milanese tile material, in order to achieve an active dialogue between contemporary and traditional elements. The wood beams of the roof has been cured and repainted in white so as to obtain a bright atmosphere. All the pieces of furniture are custom made: the wardrobes, the kitchen, the living room have been finely studied and decorated following the customers’ taste, and the white marble top embellishes the kitchen. Flooring textures and decorations stand out thanks to a neutral treatment of walls and ceilings, with light and fresh colours, mainly in the bathrooms design, with both a Mediterranean and contemporary flavour. The furnishings, wisely chosen by the owners, are both vintage or recycled – such as the wall lamps, the living room table and the bathroom furniture -and contemporary but tailored with the contribution of the carpenter. In general, the design has always tried to prefer Italian materials and supplies as much as possible. Contact 02Arch
