Tom Godden Architects was engaged by a private client to combat the archaic heritage planning policies and complex brief for a new residential dwelling in Victoria Park, Western Australia. The subdivided lot was tight in dimension, with a mature verge tree located on the preferred access corner to the South East. A series of unsightly boundary finishes from the neighbouring dwellings scarred the fabric of the site.

An inventive and contemporary approach to the difficult statutory parameters resulted in a classy twin gable, two storey house with a combination of boutique materials including steel, reclaimed brick and natural stones. The outlook to the external focussed on the best pockets of unfilled space with stylish landscaping in multiple zones creating a series of origins and destinations for the entertainer.

The steel primary superstructure eliminated the need for sheer walls; allowing graceful spacious volumes of living throughout the Ground Floor, with a delightful daybed lined with bookshelves tucked around the corner from the open plan. Upstairs, the clever spread of private quarters ensures retreat from the chaos of family life accessed on a sophisticated journey up a floating spotted gum stair lined with stainless steel cabled balusters. The superbly fabricated steel peeks out in select moments of the interior design; a hint to the industrial approach to the construction of this family home.

The English heritage of the client demanded a tip of the cap to their motherland; a brick chimney hosting a large gas fireplace delivers a warm, homely feel to the dwelling. The last-minute on-site discovery of an evening city view punctures the Upper Floor chimney; a chuckling strange but captivating moment in the journey to bed.

This house was an experiment with raw materiality, and the outcome serves a platter of warmth with style, function with comfort, and heritage with the now.
