The Mercado Orgánico (Organic Market) starts as a commercial space where a community developed system, based in the positive interaction among neighbors and the environment is promoted within a sustainability framework. In it local and artisanal products are marketed thus encouraging the culture of environmental awareness, healthy eating and responsible consumption.
The project´s target was to create a space for the community development through farming and selling organic foods reason why the project is divided in three areas: urban garden, classrooms and commercial pavilion.
The urban garden is located in the heart of the project, a space for farming plants and organic foods. The learning classrooms frame the orchard in the back of the market where 3 classroms for the development of knowledge to promote the culture of environmental awareness were located.
The commercial pavilion is constructed with profile structures and covered with a simple polycarbonate sheet that draw a circle around the orchard and allow to create a space for selling the food produce in the same market. The roof´s slope helps to direct the water towards the market´s heart: the orchard.
