In response to increased enrollment and a desire to foster a close-knit community, Ringling College of Art and Design wanted to add on-campus housing capacity. After completing Ringling’s campus master plan, Ayers Saint Gross designed a contemporary residence hall with apartment-style units for upperclass students. Siting was crucial to its success, and the result is a beautiful and functional connection between the urban edge of campus and the adjacent Whitaker Bayou. The location links the new residence hall to the rest of campus via an arts walk, a key element of the master plan. The project introduces new urbanism principles to campus with a well-defined street edge and activates a previously underutilized area.

The building’s angular shape allowed for the preservation of mature oak trees and the creation of a courtyard to engage the bayou waterfront. An adjacent pedestrian bridge strengthens connections to the heart of campus and brings underground utility lines to the new building with minimal visual disruption. In addition to two- and four-bedroom apartments, the residence hall has a ground-level project room and a series of lobby and lounge spaces connected by a central communicating stair. These creative, engaging spaces are visible from the street and the courtyard. The building’s outer white stucco shell highlights internal pops of color, inviting students walking across campus to observe the more textured interior where students are engaged in creating art. This strategic use of color and transparency emphasizes architectural details and the surrounding landscape.

A covered porch facing the bayou and the arts walk provides additional space for creating art and community. The porch and courtyard facilitate required floodplain compensation, and the adjacent parking lot has a subterranean vault for stormwater mitigation.
