Rebirth of Rumene Manor ensemble started 15 years ago, when the Manor House of once prosperous Estate located in historical region of Courland was renovated from ruins into exquisite country mansion. The Manor House was followed by reconstruction of historical landscape park with lake, renovation of stable, garden house and carriage house each preserving its unique character but adapted to the demands of the 21st century lifestyle.
The Manor Barn was built in 1913 by Estate’s last Baltic German landlord with the aim to breed there dairy cattle from Denmark. During the Soviet collective farm period (1945-1990) the Barn housed hundreds of cows and gradually declined into ruins.
The newly renovated Barn has a new function – it serves as event center with spacious hall for exhibitions, concerts, conferences, private and public celebrations. But the original character of the building is preserved through the grand scale, rough finish and selection of natural materials (new or recycled) – brick, stone, wood, metal. The original stone walls were restored and new ones build using the same historical techniques. In the entrance hall new floor was built using restored old bricks. The original wooden roofing framework was renovated to hold the new stone slate roof. A lot of rough metal work is used all over the interior there is a massive metal fireplace in the entrance hall and public staircases and railing is made of metal, wardrobe equipment as well as WC wall panels and cabin doors are made of recycled metal plates. Large window openings provide splendid sights to the surrounding ensemble and landscape, ceiling windows ensure enough daylight.
Phase II of conversion will finish the renovation of the Barn and will include 13 guest apartments.
