Clad in a light-toned precast concrete, the facility respects its context while expressing the vigor and visionary aspirations of the VCU Medical School.

Situated within the dense, urban campus in the heart of downtown Richmond, the design opens the building to its context while defining the building mass through well-scaled components.

Site and Building Circulation

An inviting and efficient diagonal pedestrian circulation path across the site resolves the disconnect between the symbolic center of the campus to the east and the functional center of the campus to the west.

Public areas are concentrated near the base of the building, with classrooms and labs occupying the upper levels.

Main Lobby

The program is arranged such that the public areas are located toward the base of the building; program specificity increases with height. Efficient access throughout the height of the building is facilitated by strategically placed vertical circulation elements. On upper floors, student lounges are located on alternating floors, providing opportunities for the student community to define itself in an informal manner.

12th Street Entry

The sequence of spaces from the entrance on 12th Street includes a covered portico, a double-height lobby, and a diagonal ramp, or stepped forum space. A circular stair leads to the second floor, which accommodates a bridge to Main Hospital, a 250-seat auditorium, and overlook to the main lobby.

Sustainable Design

Registered for LEED Silver certification, the project’s sustainable design features include climate walls, allow for abundant natural light, and incorporate internal sunshade devices.
