Victoria House in Johannesburg, South Africa by Nico van der Meulen ArchitectsOctober 22nd, 2020 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: Nico van der Meulen Architects Victoria residence is set in the Waterfall Country Estate, on a site overlooking the waterfall development and a lush wetland. The Residence occupies the width of its constrained site to maximize on becoming a receptacle for the views and expanse of nature to the north. The residence was conceived and developed as a monolithic stone remnant, which was sliced and excavated to reveal a softer and comforting interior. The exterior is rugged and purposefully reduced to two or three materials. In doing so, the transition to the interior enhances the crossover experience.
The interior was conceived from the requirement of being a liveable and comfortable home, coming together through the use of singular materials in different ways, thereby threading the design language and material palette through every space in the home. Natural oak, granite, marble, and threads of bronze define the authentic palette. It is divided into three levels, the Basement level containing the entertainment zones with the Home Cinema and Playroom, while the Ground Level serves the daily routines of the family, housing a large open plan living and dining room, intertwining with the double volume space. With three different levels upon entry to the home, the daily functions and zones within the home are defined and organized, with circulation on the entry level, open plan living, dining and kitchen areas on the mid-level and the indoor swimming pool, guest suite, lanai and home office on the lower level. The First level delineates the spaces of relaxation, with three bedrooms, the main suite with two independent dressing rooms and a seamless en-suite bathroom is situated on the eastern wing, contained within a concrete frame seen from the northern façade, while the two kids rooms, with lounge and en-suite bathrooms are situated towards the west, contained in the second concrete frame. The upper level also offers a home gymnasium, a sewing room and a relaxing pyjama lounge. The expanse of the home is quite evident in its footprint and its plenitude of rooms and spaces, always offering something new. Ultimately, this home was crafted for its owners to enjoy from a functionality perspective and to enhance their way of life. Contact Nico van der Meulen Architects
