Article source: Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Completed in 1914 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Cook County Hospital building is the symbolic heart of the Illinois Medical District, a healthcare innovation community located on Chicago’s West Side. SOM, in collaboration with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., adapted the former hospital to meet the changing needs of the neighborhood, while preserving and restoring its historic architectural features.
As the Illinois Medical District expanded through the 1990s, the hospital was left vacant and ultimately closed in 2002. In 2018, the Civic Health Development Group formed a plan to energize the neighborhood by reestablishing the building as a vibrant, mixed-use, transit-focused development. The 350,000-square-foot adaptive reuse project now houses a Hyatt Place/Hyatt House Hotel, Cook County medical office facility, a food hall, daycare, and museum space. The first of several phases, the Old Cook County hospital redevelopment energizes the district by reestablishing the building as the keystone for a vibrant, mixed-use, transit-focused development. The multi-use redevelopment revitalizes the surrounding Illinois Medical District and provides much needed amenities to support the needs of medical district workers, patients, and their families.
