This house is located in the city of Côte Saint-Luc, on the island of Montreal. It borders King-Edward Street in which the “split-level” abounds, these typical 1950s-level houses.

It is a residence of this kind which stood on these places before a fire destroyed it. Its owner, a young couple, had chosen it among several others, because it met their needs and their tastes point by point. Mandated to replace it, we have proposed a renewed interpretation of the “split-level” concept.

A ten-storey building, in a “brutalist” style, a semi-public park and a residence surround the flat site, itself made up of three elements: a backyard, the building and a paving stone leading to the street.

The main volume parallel to the street and clad in brick forms a T seen from the front facade. The steel-clad garage is set back from it under the left side of the T, forming a loggia at the front door.

A third volume, to the right and to the rear, houses the half-level which rises in front of the 10-storey building and protects the privacy of the central terrace.

The interior of the residence is fitted out according to the principles of psychomorphism and is structured around a central staircase. At its base, on the ground floor, are the glazed day spaces overlooking the gardens. It is surmounted by the bedrooms located upstairs.

The half-levels offer two opposing atmospheres: one, dark, with a low ceiling and the other, bright, with double height.

Finally, the staircase climbs into a vertical void capped by a skylight. The materiality of the building, both outside and inside, accentuates the perception of spaces.
