Aliaga Youth Center is located in the district of Aliaga which is situated at about 50 km north of metropolitan city of İzmir, Turkey. Aliaga is a port town populated by approx. 100 thousand people, and it is quite important for Aegean Region of Turkey thanks to huge petrochemical facilities, oil refineries, shipyards and plants built around the town.
Aliaga Youth Center is multifunctional building aimed for the use of young individuals living in Aliaga; thus, it consists of various sports facilities, classrooms, movie halls etc. The project site is measured 6467 sqm, which is located at the junction of two central boulevards, just opposite to a covered marketplace. The building has four storeys including a basement floor.
The project, which has 10523 sqm gross built area; has an underground car parking area available for 58 vehicles, locker rooms, technical and service spaces on the basement floor. On the ground floor; the users are met by a 1300 sqm indoor sports hall, a semi-olympic swimming pool, a children’s pool, trainers’ rooms, locker rooms and offices for building management. Indoor sports hall can be used by different sports activities such as wrestling, badminton, taekwon-do etc. The first floor houses fitness, cardio and gymnastics areas as well as spinning and pilates classrooms available for group use and in addition to a vitamin bar. On the second floor, there are twelve temporary accomodation units serving for a total of 24 people; classrooms, seminar rooms and three 77-seater movie halls. A foyer area, cafe and a playground for children are also sits on this floor in order to serve for the attendants of movie screenings and various events.
It is worth to mention that accesibility was an important criterion for the architects. Although Aliaga Youth Center contains a quite dense program, it is 100% accessible for disabled people. The center attracts many young people from various age groups; acts an educational and entertainment hub for young people from Aliaga and neighboring districts.
