Residenza Laranjeiras in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by Fernanda Marques Arquitetos Associados

Located on the south coast of Rio de Janeiro, Laranjeiras residence is inspired by the lush nature of the surroundings. Steel is the structural core, wood the shell that protects it from the sea and connects it to the green area, one of the most beautiful in Brazil.

The large glass frames are the thin membrane dividing and uniting the interior and exterior spaces. Fernanda Marques’ first objective was to create a dialogue between the parts, making Laranjeiras a contemporary jewel between the ocean and the rainforest.

The home is contemporary and minimalist, like all the Brazilian architect’s projects, and is enriched with some of the most famous design pieces: Ingo Maurer’s “Lacrima del Pescatore” chandelier, Cassina’s sofa which defines two different living areas “and gives the home its unique character”, and finally the Hugo França table with chairs by the Campana brothers.

The Marques family’s summer residence, which became a refuge of choice during the long lockdown period, Laranjeiras is also a place to experiment with a passion for art and design. “Every choice is very important,” says Fernanda, “and that is why I prefer to use elements with a lot of texture,” as can be seen, for example, in the armchair designed by Paola Lenti. “I love to change the furniture and bring new colours into this house”.

The dining room is integrated with the living area – the dining table is by Patricia Urquiola – and features tapestries made by Brazilian artist Leda Catunda.

The master bedroom, which opens out onto the ocean, has emphasised the use of wood for a final effect of great warmth and recollection.
