This kindergarten school designed by the architect Carolina Penna for the Municipality of São Caetano do Sul is open to use by the community. Inserted in the clearing of an important square in the city, it is surrounded by vegetation and equipment for leisure and contemplation, and has environments supported by a circular cover, integrating the spaces. Empowering current pedagogical practices, the voids of the school are as important as the classrooms.

The school-park concept adopted by the city hall of São Caetano do Sul in this early childhood education unit is related to the integrated implementation of a large square and the shared use with the community, which is the point of contact with the school-park model. created by educator Anísio Teixeira in the 1920s to reshape education in Bahia based on full-time education, socialization, work preparation and citizenship development. The objective in the city of ABC Paulista is to encourage a more holistic view by children and break with the linear model of classrooms arranged along large corridors and students sitting in a row.

The school is located in a square that occupies an entire block close to the city hall of São Caetano do Sul, where in the past there was the first public school in the municipality. Despite being neglected, the large trees remained in place, maintained by the school’s project based on the use of an existing clearing. \”The proposal to preserve the square and to house a neighborhood association in the school made the committee formed by representatives of the public power and civil society of São Caetano do Sul give 100% approval to the project\”, details the architect Carolina Penna.

In the form of an island, the square is flanked by the busy avenue, in front, and by a street with less traffic, behind, respectively, the north and south faces of the project. The front sidewalk was widened to accommodate a greater flow of people and access to the school was positioned at the rear, while the sides of the school are areas for outdoor activities – a space for playing and a contemplative and events garden, with a stage and vegetable garden. -, inside the square. Reception is the sensation conveyed by the circular roof that shelters the entire program, reverberating the shape of the pre-existing clearing.

Structured with glued laminated pine beams and sealed with a triple layer – internal lining, also pine, plywood sheet in membrane on the external waterproofing -, under it a central patio is the epicenter of the project, around which they gravitate the concrete and glass volumes of the classrooms and other functional sectors. The roof is about 40 meters in diameter, whose beams are arranged radially and are supported by 12 round concrete pillars – eight of which are visible.

The internal openings of the classrooms face the courtyard and in the center there is an arena with bleachers that, dug into the ground, enhances the space with its discreet presence. Positioned at the front and sides of the school, the classrooms extend into the square through uncovered terraces, delimited by a wall made with overlapping ceramic blocks, composing a fully hollowed-out bulkhead. The wall interconnects the three pairs of classrooms, extrapolating the area of projection of the roof.

The natural luminosity of the interiors is abundant, which passes through the windows and complements the acrylic skylights. The air circulates freely through the central courtyard and the concrete frames in the classroom frames work as benches inside and outside their domains.
