The Rice Barn House design is largely driven by responding to the site’s environmental condition and by embracing the inherited local construction methodology. Our approach seeks to fuse Indonesia’s vernacular architecture with contemporary building technology to accommodate today’s living lifestyle. Thus, we incorporated traditionalism by using distinct cultural form typologies, synthetized with modern materiality selections.

The form of the house was inspired by lumbung padi (Indonesian Rice Barn), a traditional architecture typology, which typically is built on four poles with a floor platform raised 2m above ground. We instill the traditional Rice Barn program distributions to the residence, where the service area is allocated on the ground level, the living room on the second level (traditionally used for village meetings and business), and private quarters on the third level.

The arched roof design form from lumbung padi is modified into a trapezoid mass that holds private living programs such as bedrooms. The roof is punctured with a circular skylight at the center, and the slanted walls are punctured with window openings to channel and activate natural light, and cross-and-stack ventilation throughout the living quarters.

Nested underneath is the open planned living room that is connected by a central spiral staircase. The living room is enveloped with frameless, bi-fold doors that blur outdoor-to-indoor boundaries. All other supporting programs are clustered on the ground level to serve the needs of the living programs on the levels above. The modernization of lumbung padi traditional house is achieved through current technologies and materiality that support and improves modern lifestyle.
