My family and other animals» is a comprehensive home reform in the neighborhood of Vistabella (Murcia), for a family and their pets.

As in the well-known book by Gerald Durrell, “my family and other animals\”, animals are part of the daily life of this family. Unlike the house in Corfu, in this case we started from a 77m2 city apartment.

Before housing reform

The original house needed a total renovation.

The facilities were outdated. The thermal envelope was insufficient. The distribution did not respond to the needs of the family. The people who inhabit it did not feel identified with the aesthetics.

Like so many others, this is one of those homes that confinement put to the test and did not pass the test.

Connection of spaces

The strategy in the reform has been to expand the space by connecting rooms, with a more fluid distribution, and a unifying treatment of the spaces

Raw view structure

When stripping the pillars, we saw that the concrete from which they were made had very special aesthetic characteristics. For this reason, we decided to leave them with porches made up of exposed and raw concrete beams and pillars.

Natural light throughout the house

In this reform, translucent glass has been used to let natural light into rooms that lacked it. This is the case of the two bathrooms and the hall.

In this way, these translucent shower enclosures act as a separation between the two bathrooms and the hall.

Flat renovation: pet furniture

Inspired by the drawing “L’aquari in casa” by Lina Bo Bardi, the furniture for her pets – doghouse and aquarium – was integrated with the rest of the intervention.

Apartment reform: the kitchen

The kitchen after the reform was integrated into the living room.

The dining table is placed in continuity with the island, generating a sequence of ways of being: informal at the bar, conventional at the table, relaxing at the sofa.
