Fire Station 22 in Seattle, Washington by Weinstein A+U

Monday, June 22nd, 2020

Article source: Weinstein A+U

Fire Station 22 was conceived in response to two fundamental constraints: a very small and narrow site, and an operational imperative for a drive-through apparatus bay. The site is located on a heavily trafficked arterial street that leads to a freeway intersection, with frequent back-ups challenging access and egress to the station. The congested street precluded the potential for a conventional back-in apparatus bay design.

Mermaid Beach House in Gold Coast, Queensland by b.earchitecture

Friday, June 5th, 2020

Article source: b.earchitecture

The Mermaid Beach Residence is a new family home positioned along a surf beach in Queensland’s Gold Coast region, Australia. It has been designed to reflect “a desire to stay and age”.

Working with clients with a strong appreciation of concrete, the building was designed primarily of exposed concrete internally, as well as externally, with the addition of operable timber shutters on the external windows to protect against the sun and weather conditions. Bringing together the client’s want for a relaxed, open and sun-drenched costal home, poured in-situ concrete as the primary building material means that protection from the elements could be, quite literally, grounded.

A leftover 9,000 sq ft berm space was created when the City of Portland built the new one-way Couch Street couplet reconnecting the roadway to the Burnside Bridge. It is positioned centrally in the new eastside community envisioned by the Burnside Bridgehead Framework plan. The ground floor will be activated by storefront along third avenue and work space above.

Ravoli Drive Residence in Los Angeles, California by O+ L building projects, LLC

Thursday, June 4th, 2020

Article source: O+ L building projects, LLC

Sited on a site slightly under an acre in the heart of the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, the site for this estate residence descends over thirty feet from top to bottom.  Narrow at the street and widening toward the rear, the building was designed to appear as a very private single story structure from the street and expand as the house moves into the site.   At just under 14,000 sq. ft. the house was conceived of as a California Modernist Estate the building utilizes the site slope and widening to create a wing typology each reaching into the site to capture garden spaces, set up views and account for service amenities.
