Otto Felix, an architect known for the singular and expressive lines that emerge from his sketches, is present at CASACOR São Paulo 2019, which this year takes as the theme ‘Planeta Casa’ in Jockey Club. In a unique way, the professional translated the concept of the event through an address of 250m² that breathes straight lines and mixes, harmonically, a rustic side with the epitome of the contemporaneity.
Casa das Sibipirunas, divided into a living room with fireplace, kitchen and a suite with closet, instigates a more reflective and disconnected dwelling, where the proposal for a simpler life was established as a reference. Proposing a contemporary architectural project that, in technical terms, can be considered light and ease to perform, the residence was based on three main elements: glass, plaster and Roman travertine.
The conceptual approach was to create houses that sit comfortably within the established urban streetscape, provide elements of drama and discovery, and engage with the iconic harbour bridge and opera house views to the front and intimate landscaped gardens to the rear. The sites are small (255sqm and 336sqm), steep and irregular.
Responding to the irregular site boundary and contextual differences, the two houses take on different yet complementary forms, differentiated by mass and material.
Our clients bought this large Victorian house looking to make it their long term family home. They wanted to invest in the property to make an improvement to their quality and enjoyment of life. Key to their brief was to extend to the rear to form a new open-plan kitchen, living and dining room. The original kitchen-diner was incredibly cold for six months of the year (to the point of being uninhabitable!), so options for improving thermal performance and heating systems were also to be explored.
The project is located in Lingang New City, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. Seven residential neighborhoods have been built in the periphery successively, which are divided into three blocks, i.e., community commercial center, commercial street and serviced apartment. Designed based on the concept of “Market”, a series of space close to human scale are created to attract and gather traffic to both banks of the river, providing a unique shopping experience that is close to nature.
Casa Quintas is located in a gated community in Tafi Viejo, a suburb minutes away from the capital city San Miguel de Tucumán. The parti finds it’s roots moving away from all the modern architectural preconceptions of a typical country club house in Tucumán’s suburbs.
The first sketches were inspired by some sort of “Revival” on what was once the typical patio house. A large courtyard is the center of the composition, connecting the spaces and interacting differently with each and every single one of them. Thereby the social area projected in a single large fluid space opens completely to the courtyard, while the private area’s relationship to it is more subtle allowing lighting and ventilation without putting intimacy at stake.
The plot in Zurich-Witikon is located right next to designated open land. All 15 condominiums offer generous layouts and a very high standard. The different sized apartments and their spacial arrangements prevent sleeping rooms to be located next to living rooms.
Loggias and terraces are arranged in order to guarantee privacy from neighbouring surroundings. The buildings' facade is dominated by the horizontal concrete bands and vertical wooden cover made of larch.
“My home feels like a secure and loving, masculine embrace.” (client)
Hidden in an affluent coastal suburb is 'Vodka Palace' a luxurious concrete cave, tempered with natural timber finishes and primed for premium culinary, audio and visual pleasure. It is the result of a very strong collaborative process between client, architect, builder, sub-consultants, sub-contractors and suppliers. The architect was the Producer, the builder was the Director, the client wrote the script, and the sub-consultants, sub-contractors and suppliers were the invaluable technicians and artisans that pulled the vision from the ether into a 3D reality. The spirit of this project was one of its greatest joys, all worked together harmoniously to manufacturer a resolution and it is this fact in which I take the most pride. Enduring relationships have been forged and I see the end result as not my own but the combined efforts and inspiration of everyone involved.
The taking of part of this project, consists of 3 independent departments for members of the same family, arises the need of the client to have privacy with respect to his neighbors.
The land where he building is located has 2 lots, although one of them (the posterior) looks directly to the sea, the other one, the main one, faces to a multifamily building of 9 floors of height, whose windows look directly to the Pachyderm Building, generating the sensation of being directly exposed.
The loft is situated on the 8th floor of a former Baťa shoe factory building in Zlín, overlooking the green heart of the town. Its design aims to integrate the town’s image into the space of the apartment. The design approach contradicts the usual loft-making procedure, which emphasizes industrial materials in the interior, by transforming the space into an abstract composition with the industrial aspect presented through the view of the surrounding area, framed by the Zlín skyscraper and the valley. The inner space features the gradual opening of the individual epicentres of the apartment. Its open space allows the separation of the social and private parts by using multi-level differentiation, rather than sharp divides. The interior is defined by the main social space, framed by the curved furniture partition wall and the built-in kitchen, which hides two rooms, a bathroom, an entrance hall and a “secret” staircase. The main elevated space can be accessed through this partition, defined by the ramp gently ascending from the kitchen and dining area, past the play area in front of the window and through the space between the two atypical sofas to the bedroom, with its built-in round bathtub. The space is formed by the symbiotic structure composed of triangles that spirals around the centre of the layout and creates a stage that also functions as an auditorium, offering a view of the town. The materials are in fine shades of white – whitened birch plywood, white leatherette upholstery and white PVC flooring – accentuated with glass railing dividers and sliding bedroom partitions, with the kitchen in high gloss and mosaic tiles.
Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson, co-founders of globally renowned design firm, Drake/Anderson were enlisted to oversee the complete renovation of a striking glass house in Columbia County, New York. Built in 2007 by Columbia University Professor and architect, Michael Bell, the 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom home was inspired by significant mid-century architecture such as Philip Johnson’s Glass House and Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth house.
