Article source: noa* network of architecture

Old house, new splendour. The Altstadthotel Weisses Kreuz in Innsbruck’s city centre invites its guests to indulge in a refreshing and colourful journey through time with 48 new rooms and suites, where noa* has created the perfect setting.

No right angles in sight here: the venerable house in Herzog-Friedrich-Straße, which dates from the 1460s, is a building in Innsbruck’s historic streets whose architecture is inflected with architectural elements from a wide range of historical eras, having undergone constant transformation. Yet the distinct features of each period coalesce in timeless fashion to form a symbiosis of urbanism. In keeping with the rhythm of change over the centuries, the Hotel Weisses Kreuz fits into this pattern, providing a uniquely appealing architectural challenge for noa*.

Hill Country Wine Cave in Texas by Clayton Korte

Friday, June 18th, 2021

Article source: Clayton Korte

Located at the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country, this private wine cave serves as a destination along a secluded bend of the Blanco River. Excavated into the north face of a solid limestone hillside, this shotcrete lined tube is protected on the east and west by tall oak and elm trees, allowing it to nearly disappear within the native landscape. The unassuming exterior entry court reveals a bit of mystery as it provides just a glimpse of what lies within. Heavy limestone boulders, collected from the excavation, and lush vegetation further camouflage the entry as you descend into the mouth of the cave.

Barbajean in Ħad-Dingli, Malta by Mizzi Studio

Saturday, May 22nd, 2021

Article source: Mizzi Studio

Barbajean has been designed to celebrate the joy and tradition of eating and drinking – an activity that unites friends, family and communities and that has been inextricably linked with architecture for centuries. Mizzi Studio’s team embraced the brief for Barbajean as a context driven conversion project, drawing influence from the colours, materials and traditions of its village home. Dingli remains one of Malta’s most beloved belvedere destinations, with uninterrupted sea views over the Mediterranean Sea and the islet of Filfla. The team was keen to create a new destination for the village – a recreational landmark that would celebrate its environment whilst injecting it with new life.

RYÙ – YUL Airport in Quebec, Canada by Ménard Dworkind architecture & design

Saturday, February 20th, 2021

Article source: Ménard Dworkind architecture & design

After exiting the stressful lines and x-ray machines at the security gates of Montreal’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau airport, you are immediately greeted by the warmth and tranquility of the RYÙ sushi restaurant.

The complex and repetitive pine ceiling structure instantly catches the eye of travelers. Mirrors installed on the back wall of the restaurant accentuate this repetitive effect giving the impression that the space is twice as deep. In the center of the space, an angular counter articulates around the kitchen block. Back-lit polycarbonate panels cover this block acting like a glowing lantern. Prep counters with under counter storage curve around the kitchen clad in blackened hot rolled steel. The sushi bar, treated like a stone monolith clad with ceppo di gre, has a grid pattern carved into it giving the effect of stacked bricks.

Doug Fir in Portland, Oregon by Skylab

Thursday, February 4th, 2021

Article source: Skylab

Doug Fir is a 25,100-square-foot modern log cabin-inspired bar, restaurant, and music venue, conjuring an idealized vision of Portland’s up-and-coming potential as a global travel destination and cultural hub. The site began as a run-down diner adjacent to a forgotten motor lodge in an underappreciated stretch of East Burnside. The mountain lodge aesthetic was created by expanding the modernist elements of the original motel and recapturing the optimistic experience of mid-century travel and motel culture found in the existing site. Large glulam beams were restored and offset with new modern finishes of stainless steel, glass block, and chrome ceiling panels, now seen in a fresh context.

PRO espresso in Kyiv, Ukraine by YUDIN Design

Friday, January 29th, 2021

Article source: YUDIN Design

PRO espresso opened just after the lockdown, at the height of last summer. One of the characteristics that differentiates this cafe from the others is the use by the barista of compact Modbar machines instead of the classic ones.

Modbar is visually a single piston and a compact press. Therefore, the owners of PRO espresso asked the founders of YUDIN Design studio to pay all their attention in the interior to the progressive devices and the skills of the barista, who is finally not hidden behind the machine but produces masterpieces based on espresso right in front of the visitor’s eyes!
