Design and construction of a third gateway crossing linking Abu Dhabi Island to the Gulf south shore. Our two-way four lane highway bridge features cantilevered road decks suspended from symmetrical steel arches, which form a sinusoidal waveform – giving this huge structure its fluid silhouette.
The new Butcher’s bridge concludes the arrangement of the Jože Plecnik’s covered market from the mid-1930s. It connects the market area on the Adamic-Lunder embankment with the new market area on the regulated Petkovšek embankment.
The proposal envisages a ‘house-bridge’ with three horizontal platforms. The lower, the upper and the canopy platforms determine two levels of covered space above the river. The dimensions of the platforms, 39×19 m, enable a continuation of both the market and the public event area on the lower and upper levels of the bridge. All three platforms are equipped with slender bell-shaped columns that alternatingly widen either downwards or upwards, tied to a homogeneous spatial structure. The columns are placed onto the platforms in two longitudinal rows, which leave open a central space on each level. The columns are set at a distance from all edges of the platforms so that the space between the fence of the platforms and the columns offers room for a three-metre passageway.

De Scheybeek rises in the inner dunes near Heemskerk. The lower reaches of the stream, made visible in the park, culminates in the Noordzeelanaal. The natural level of the brook lies about 30 cm. above ground level, approximately one metre above the level of the ditches in the surrounding polder. This artificial situation offers opportunities for nature and recreation, as well as being the starting point for the park design. The brook has been staged together with the new pedestrian and bicycle paths in the extended spaces in the park. A game of meeting and disappearing takes place between the visitor and the stream.
The proposal meets the pedestrian continuity between the gardens of the Explanadas and the Park Pueblos de las Américas, bridging the difference in height between these two areas and freeing the passage of the Avenue Virgen de la Cabeza, main entrance city traffic.

Danish-American Architects MLRP, based in Copenhagen, has completed a new foot bridge in Copenhagen Central Park.
The Woven Bridge is a modern interpretation of a classical steel park bridge.
With the new Woven Bridge, crossing the lake in Copenhagen Central Park and getting close to the water finally becomes possible. It allows for viewing the park and lake from new perspectives. The bridge is placed at the southern end of the lake and makes for a new shortcut, when crossing through the park. Designing the bridge, it was key to create a bridge that would blend into the landscape of the park but at the same time create a structure that has its own identity and personality. The bridge join the two banks of the lake, which are at different heights, with a slender arched structure. The foundations are concealed under the steel structure making the transition between bridge and nature more refined.
For the 2010 GLOW we are proposing a linear spatial construction that links the City to the Ocean. Working with the site of the Bay Street boardwalk, we intend to make visible the connection across the sand to the edge of the ocean. This is a physical “land bridge” connecting the urban landscape of Santa Monica to the edge of the water, but also a conceptual leap that transitions from the “logics” that define the city to the those of the ocean. Taking the vertical nature of the city and merging it with the horizontal impulses of the pacific, we are proposing a visceral and intense space.
The Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge is a very special project for me. Not only is it a signature component of the City of Dallas’ urban revitalization efforts, but it is also the first vehicular bridge I have built in the United States.
After I was commissioned to design the bridge, I toured Dallas and noticed that the Trinity River basin was littered with industrial buildings, electrical lines and proposed new toll roads. I saw this as a lost opportunity for the City, since the river basin had the potential to be of defining importance to Dallas’ future development. The image below of my initial Master plan model dates to my first involvement with the City’s rejuvenation project in 1999. My concept of linking the City’s two river banks by a series of dramatic bridges and boardwalks across a flooded lakeside environment, sought to revitalize this under-used resource in the heart of the city, and create a recreational facility as important to Dallas as Central Park is to New York City.

Program: In January 2002 Dallas City Council awarded a design contract to Santiago Calatrava for the creation of a “signature bridge” across the Trinity River.
An enclosed interactive space spanning the River Ebro to form a gateway to the Zaragoza Expo 2008, a hybrid of pedestrian footbridge and exhibition pavilion. Four structural elements correspond to specific spatial enclosures, which intersect and brace each other. This fluid, dynamic design interprets the Expo’s theme: ‘Water and Sustainable Development’.
The burying underground of the highway that ran along the edges of the Manzanares river provided the opportunity to open up a new urban territory to the inhabitants of Madrid: the Manzanares Park. A series of bridges over the river will allow passage from one side of the park to the other. Designed to link the neighborhoods on the right and left banks of the river, the Arganzuela Footbridge will be the longest of all the bridges to be built. The bridge will be for both pedestrians and cyclists.
The idea of the project is to link the landscape to the new building and the exbuilding to the entire scenario of Jøssingfjorden; it’s valleys and context, both visual, historical and technological. The architecture of the proposal will express the power and intentions that people have had for generations. It will make use of the most developed technologies and formal principles as they did according to their time. The proposal connects the two mountains (2 dominant resources) of the valleys and will give the museum and the geopark a new stronger character with a program that fulfills the requirements of function, management and maintenance. It is changing technologically and economically feasible. The proposal meets the requirements and the terms as described in the competition documentation according to program, space /areas and possesses a certain capacity of exception.
