The office complex facilitates a coherent environment for reseaching, public administration and private business within the pedagogical and technological fields.

The deisgn of the house is a clear signal to the users and the audience about Kjølnes ambitions as a regional meeting place for research and industry. An architecture that does not consume more than it returns  – a low- energy building that shapes sustainability – and at the same time an aesthetic boldness for the campus area in Porsgrunn.

Yunoeki Oyu in Japan by Kengo Kuma and Associates

Wednesday, April 10th, 2019

Article source: Kengo Kuma and Associates

Oyu onsen is a famous hot spring in Kazuno, Akita. We designed a community center here incorporating a shop, café, open-air theater, park, footbath, and biotope under one large roof. In order to create a dynamic space which varies according to the diverse programs, we referred to mage wappa, a round lunch basket made of thin wood, a traditional craft in Akita’s. Cylinders of LVL (laminated veneer lumber) reference mage wappa and comprise the structure of the building. The assemblage of those rings then functions not only as a transparent structure but also as a partition or a shelf when needed.

The Carpenter Hotel in Austin, Texas by Specht Architects

Monday, April 8th, 2019

Article source: Specht Architects

The Carpenter Hotel is a hidden oasis in one of the last pockets of Old Austin. It is a compound of buildings of different vintages surrounding a pecan tree-shaded courtyard and pool, and features a restaurant, café, event pavilion, and 93 guest rooms.  It has a character that is unlike any other hotel in town.

The new hotel building is composed of an exposed rough-concrete frame, with infill walls made of locally-sourced clay masonry blocks and recycled steel oil-drilling pipe.  Where trees had to be removed (in all cases these were damaged or otherwise compromised), the pecan wood was sawn into boards and used as a feature in the spaces.  Materials are expressed as-is, and decorative effect, where it exists, is created through the spacing and patterning of basic elements, or by the direct application of signage.  There is no attempt to mimic historic styles, nor is there an attempt to follow architectural trends.  It is simple and direct, and its power comes from this straightforward expression.

Miles and Shirley Fiterman Hall in New York City, New York by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners

Monday, April 8th, 2019

Article source: Pei Cobb Freed & Partners

After the original Fiterman Hall was irreparably damaged on 9/11 by collapse of the neighboring World Trade Center, the construction of its replacement became an important neighborhood goal, symbolic of Lower Manhattan’s resurgence.

Out of the many design challenges faced, including the environmental remediation and deconstruction of the existing structure, the greatest challenge was to accommodate a vertical campus on a relatively small site. Housing 15 levels of program space, the new building is home to four major academic programs and contains a significant portion of BMCC’s general education teaching spaces.

Boston Bites in Mohali, India by Studio Ardete

Thursday, April 4th, 2019

Article source: Studio Ardete

Exploring the urbanity of the tri-city through an interesting amalgamation, BOSTON BITES is an urban café in Mohali, Punjab which delves into a notion of sensuality through an appropriation of space and context. The industrialized aesthetic magnifies the volumetric tonality. The details are exposed to the fore-front which radiate an over-arching exposition- a symbiosis of space and story which becomes an alluring supposition of the construct. This eliminates the sole physical aspects of a space which now becomes a subtle presence.

Cloud Coworking in Barcelona, Spain by MESURA

Friday, March 29th, 2019

Article source: MESURA

The primary sign that the concept of work and the way of conceptualising office spaces has changed, is probably embodied in the appearance of the freelancer: An individualist concept of work that depends on collaboration. They are the people who no longer work inside an office space for a big corporation, but rather inside a café, on some faraway island, or inside a coworking: a space acknowledging that there is a need for people to be around others, even while working.

Dock G6 – Radisson Blu in Bordeaux, France by atelier d’architecture king kong

Friday, March 29th, 2019

Article source: atelier d’architecture king kong

Dock G6 lies on the concrete slab around the wet docks, situated between the neighbourhoods of the Chartrons and Bacalan in Bordeaux. It enjoys a prime position, directly adjacent to wet dock n°1 and situated between the Promenade des Bassins and Rue Lucien Faure which runs from the Jacques Chaban-Delmas vertical lift bridge to the start of Cours Balguerie-Stuttenberg.

Before the Nicolas Michelin et Associés (ANMA) agency defined an urban redevelopment plan for the area in 2010, the concrete slab was home to an industrial site comprising warehouses, storage silos, wet and dry docks, a submarine base, cranes and a lot of very silty water… These elements shaped a universe enriched by the varied palette of its raw materials and which was in need of a form of redevelopment which would not betray its essence. This is why the architectural identity of this hotel complex has been designed on the principle of an inhabited exoskeleton which enters into meaningful dialogue with the spirit of the place.

Dough & CO in Vientiane, Laos by Tomi atelier architects

Wednesday, March 27th, 2019

Article source: Tomi atelier architects

As for this project, the client have requested us to come up with a design that would turn this space to be more than just a normal “Café”. This place shall be more flexible and capable to hold many functions such as, a corporate meeting point, a chillax place, a place for an exhibition event where people come and exchanging their knowledge.

Moreover, it could become a destination for someone who would wish to restore their health and mind with freshly cooked food that is originated from the café’s own recipe.
