The Hangar at Kenmore Town Square in Washington by GRAHAM BABA ARCHITECTS

Wednesday, October 17th, 2018

Article source: GRAHAM BABA ARCHITECTS

The 4,600-square-foot Hangar and 24,000-square-foot Town Square provide a year-round focal point and a symbolic living room for the city. Located in the heart of downtown, the complex touches upon the primal notions of gathering, creating a venue for passive and active recreation while ensuring a home for nature in the rapidly growing community. The Hangar, conceived as a pavilion, is designed to morph depending upon weather or functional requirements. Simple and large, the space opens to the Town Square via a 24-foot-wide by 16-foot-tall bi-fold window wall. When open, the large roof overhang provides protection from rain and sun, and enables parents easy access to their kids playing in the adjacent 14,000-square-foot plaza. The plaza features a fountain and heated rocks to encourage people to linger in inclement weather. The inverted roof lifts up from the building to gesture toward the park and adjacent thoroughfare, with the residual gap between building and roof becoming a dramatic clerestory. At night, the extensive glazing transforms the shelter into a lantern.

ONE LOVE espresso bar in Kiev, Ukraine by YUDIN Design

Tuesday, October 16th, 2018

Article source: YUDIN Design

In the center of Kyiv, on Bolshaya Vasilkovskaya street, there is an inspiring coffee bar ONE LOVE espresso bar, the interior and history of which was created by the studio YUDIN Design. Designers Vladimir and Aleksandr Yudin created the name and other elements of the identity of this institution. A simple but ingenious logo pushes to a creative thinking. Performed in the style of a light stamp, it consists of the defining word ONE and the word LOVE, which is represented by a kind of puzzle. The letters O and V are composed of graphic “coffee beans,” while V is distinctly reminiscent of the heart. It’s all LOVE!

The location of the bar is symbolic. It is a sort of balance of the material and spiritual values of the modern man: in the heart of the capital, under the wings of the Toronto business center, overlooking the church of St. Nicholas. Is it possible to think about the eternal here without stopping for it from the ground or from a cup of strong espresso?

BLOX – Danish Architecture Center in Copenhagen, Denmark by OMA

Wednesday, October 10th, 2018

Article source: OMA

The BLOX project, home of the Danish Architecture Center (DAC), contains exhibition spaces, offices and co-working spaces, a café, a bookstore, a fitness centre, a restaurant, twenty-two apartments and an underground automated public carpark, but it is not the acrobatic mixing of uses that defines this project; its ultimate achievement is in ‘discovering’ its own site.

The Old Brewery site, split into two by one of Copenhagen’s main ring roads, didn’t really register as a building site until the design of the new DAC identified it as such. Straddling the road, making public connections both above and below, BLOX connects the parliament district with the harbour front and brings culture to the water’s edge. A space for cars becomes a space for people; a space to pass through becomes a space to reside.

Bloomberg’s New European Headquarters in London, England by Foster + Partners

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018

Article source: Foster + Partners

Bloomberg’s new European headquarters is respectful of its location in the heart of the City of London, close to the Bank of England, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the church of St. Stephen’s Walbrook. In its form, massing and materials, the new building is uniquely of their place and time – a natural extension of the City that will endure and improve the surrounding public realm. It is a true exemplar of sustainable development, with a BREEAM Outstanding rating – the highest design-stage score ever achieved by any major office development. Occupying a full city block, the 3.2-acre site comprises two buildings united by bridges that span over a pedestrian arcade that reinstates Watling Street, an ancient Roman road that ran through the site. Bloomberg Arcade is now a key route for people moving around the City, with restaurants and cafes at ground level, set back behind an undulating façade under a covered colonnade. Three public plazas, located at each end of the arcade and in front of the building’s entrance, provide new civic spaces in the heart of the Square Mile.

The Shop at The CAC in New Orleans, Louisiana by Eskew+Dumez+Ripple

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018

Article source: Eskew+Dumez+Ripple

The Shop is a comprehensive co-working development that is located on the third and forth floors of the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) in downtown New Orleans, one of New Orleans’ most important cultural institutions. Targeting technology, arts, and cultural-based businesses, The Shop serves as a hub of entrepreneurship in the developing Downtown innovation corridor.

Located in a historic 1920 former warehouse, the building was used as the headquarters for K&B, a local drugstore and soda fountain until the CAC acquired the building in the mid-1970s. The top two floors of the CAC have historically been underutilized, with The Shop marking the first large-scale renovation of that space in the last forty years.

Article source: G2 Lab

In the town of Arta and right next to the river, there is an “all day” place that formed the “canvas” of a very interesting renovation. The aim from the very beginning was the total reconstruction of the place and the creation of a unique atmosphere with classic elegance and a minimal touch combined in a sense of comfort and luxury.

V&A Dundee in Scotland by KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES and PiM.studio Architects

Wednesday, September 26th, 2018

Article source: PiM.studio Architects

Envelope

The building envelope is created by methods of twisting, connecting and layering the city grid axis and the adjacent RRS Discovery ship axis, using a ring structure made of reconstituted stone and concrete to compliment the traditional construction materials used in Dundee and reflect the natural cliff structure of the coastline.

The building’s form creates dramatic spaces with an impressive main hall forming a public indoor plaza, and areas that overhang the external public plaza. The external envelope draws people to the waterfront and generates a new migration route along the riverside promenade. The interior space of the main hall is filled with a gentle light emanating from apertures cut through the layered stone to create an open yet intimate public space.
