Fontys R10 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands by Ector Hoogstad Architecten

Thursday, December 10th, 2020

Article source: Ector Hoogstad Architecten

Fontys Hogeschool is investing heavily in a thorough overhaul of its campus in the heart of Eindhoven. In the coming years, the area will change from a fenced-off enclave with anonymous architecture into a knowledge landscape that is fully integrated into the city; an inviting and inspiring place where students, teachers and local companies work together on the sharing and development of knowledge. To boost this development with a powerful impulse right from the start, Ector Hoogstad Architecten designed the new R10 building as a forward-looking example of attractive and effective campus architecture. In other words: connective, flexible and extremely sustainable.

Axel Springer Campus in Berlin, Germany by OMA

Wednesday, November 18th, 2020

Article source: OMA

Axel Springer has launched a move from print to digital media. Its new building on the campus in Berlin acts both as a symbol and a tool in this transition – a building to lure the elite of (Germany’s) digital Bohemia. Bisected by a diagonal atrium that opens up to the existing Axel Springer buildings, the essence of the design is a series of terraced floors that together form a ‘valley’ that creates an informal stage at the centre – a place to broadcast ideas to other parts of the company.

Bridge Hall Apartment in Sarasota, Florida by Ayers Saint Gross

Wednesday, March 11th, 2020

Article source: Ayers Saint Gross

In response to increased enrollment and a desire to foster a close-knit community, Ringling College of Art and Design wanted to add on-campus housing capacity. After completing Ringling’s campus master plan, Ayers Saint Gross designed a contemporary residence hall with apartment-style units for upperclass students. Siting was crucial to its success, and the result is a beautiful and functional connection between the urban edge of campus and the adjacent Whitaker Bayou. The location links the new residence hall to the rest of campus via an arts walk, a key element of the master plan. The project introduces new urbanism principles to campus with a well-defined street edge and activates a previously underutilized area.

New School of Architecture, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter

Sunday, March 1st, 2020

Article source: Tham & Videgård Arkitekter

The site on the KTH campus, with its very tangible cultural and historical context and its physical limitations, could be described as the opposite of a blank slate (Tabula Rasa). The new school is inserted into an existing courtyard space with existing pathways and is located adjacent to Erik Lallerstedt’s original and quite monumental brick buildings from the early twentieth century.

Based on the logic of a free campus layout that encourages movement, the idea is to accomodate and encourage circulation within the building and all around it as a way of thoroughly integrating and anchoring the new school to the site. With its rounded contours and a total of six floors, the school building includes a sunken garden and a roof terrace, while cultivating the character of the courtyard as one continuous space. The deep red CorTen steel exterior relates to the dark red brick of existing buildings.
