“Building schools means building the future, as youngsters will assimilate and pass on their spatial experience of light, air, simplicity and beauty throughout their lives. The designers were honoured to have the opportunity to deliver creative social impulses of this kind. Following several earlier ‘trial runs’ in the centre of Mortsel (merger of three primary schools), central Antwerp (UIA) and Gasthuisberg hospital in Leuven (midwifery), this fourth winning competition design for a school building is the most expressive to date.

The winning scheme by Bramberger [Architects] proposes four blocks of buildings and a corresponding area of dedicated open spaces, articulated longitudinally by a main axle. This axle, named “Communications Promenade” acts as a central route between the buildings and, in the future, it is proposed to connect the surrounding buildings, promoting the necessary infrastructures for the creation of an investigation campus. The chess-like distribution of the buildings allows a multiplicity of visual relations between interior and exterior spaces.
WU CAMPUS – A SPECIAL PLACE FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
With its present roster of some 23,000 students, the Vienna University of Economics and Business is practically bursting at the seams, which does not make it easy to study, work or carry out research. That will change in 2013. There will be space for every student, every professor and every single faculty member. There will be space for communicating, for discussing, for exchanging ideas, for studying, for teaching, for researching, for discovering and relaxing.
Erasmus University Rotterdam has opened the new public heart of its Woudestein campus. The project can be seen as a benchmark for the way grim and gloomy ’60s and ’70s institutional areas can be sparked to life. A new semi-sunken garage has been integrated with a new public space design and pond. Together with a new student pavilion, they mark the realization of the first phase of a unique and ambitious revitalization master plan. The master plan was designed by the collaborating Dutch firms Juurlink [+] Geluk and jvantspijker architects.
We envisage the new academic space located at the north-east of the new Campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business as a venue for multiple networking. More than a mere building, the Teaching Center is a learning platform that promotes spontaneous communication while also making it possible to undertake the classes and activities that occur within. This quest for spontaneous exchange has different levels and scales sharing one common denominator: the path is the goal. For us, a contemporary Teaching Center should encourage curiosity in the everyday routine of those who teach as well as those who learn, becoming a place where moving about and getting on stagedoes not lead to experiencing spatial boundaries by instead giving free reign to the imagination.
