The dynamic structure of pyramidal forms, which interchangeably open towards the north and the south is the basis of the entire complex. These elements stretch horizontally, equally through all underground and surface levels. Open spaces, narrow clefts, ramps and slanting ceilings enable communication throughout the centre, establishing a series of separate entrances, but also ensuring the possibility of airing and natural light in a large part of work areas.
Penang Global City Center in Penang, Malaysia as designed by the award-winning, New York-based firm Asymptote under the leadership of architect Hani Rashid, will be a 21st-century symbol for Penang on both a local and global scale through the simultaneous embrace of natural landscape, contemporary urbanism and innovative, energy-efficient design. This project is an opportunity to create a new image for the city of Penang by creating a precinct that is complementary to the existing character of the city and takes advantage of the lushness of the surrounding mountainous landscape by pulling it into the urban fold. The intertwining of the two creates a new model for a rich and dynamic urban landscape.
The historic Abu Dhabi Central Market is one of the oldest sites in the city. Inspired by the traditional architecture of the Gulf this scheme aims to reinvent the market place as a contemporary mixed-use complex and give the city a new civic heart. By offering an alternative to the globalised ‘one-size-fits-all’ shopping mall it offers a distinctive modern interpretation of the regional vernacular. As a shopping experience it combines luxury goods shops with food markets and craft-based trades. Like the traditional souk, these different experiences are brought together in an interior architecture of dappled sunlight, vibrant colours and running water, with a changing rhythm of squares, courtyards and alley ways.
