OPEN SANDNES City Hall in Norway by KAMJZ

Wednesday, September 20th, 2017

Article source: KAMJZ

Enhancing Public Participation

The base for the design was the desire to create a free unrestricted access to knowledge and information, as well as a collaborative and cooperative management and decision making process with emphasis on the right to see the operations and activities of government at work. This supports government accountability and helps protect other necessary rights. The new City Hall of Sandnes would celebrate the concept of openness and transparency. Designed as a welcoming house which is as accessible as possible to it’s citizens and a building that lives up to the highest requirements for a modern, efficient and flexible office space. The volume required by the program would be adapted to the local urban conditions and modified to create connections with the surrounding area and bring the inhabitants closer to the city officials and their decision making process in the spirit of true participation. With all the office spaces continuously facing the streets a courtyard is created which would be the central area of the whole Havneparken masterplan. Walking and biking, crisscrossing from the streets, would be encouraged to reach the water promenade, creating a vibrant district for pedestrians and cyclists. The importance of the building in the area would be emphasized by it’s architectural exterior design where past tradition would be commemorated with a modern dynamic and universal outlook.

COUNTRY GARDEN FOREST CITY in Malaysia by LAVA

Tuesday, March 14th, 2017

Article source: LAVA

LAVA has won 2nd prize in an international competition to design a new city in Malaysia.

LAVA’s concept sees the city defined not as one iconic building, nor as a skyline, but as a central public space, a real forest. Chris Bosse, director of LAVA, explains: “Skylines across the world look the same – usually a couple of iconic towers in the centre surrounded by lots of lesser quality buildings, which all resemble each other.” “Here we have designed an inverse city skyline where the icon of the city is a public space, not an object/building. Our central space is a Rainforest Valley and demonstrates the equation: PEOPLE = CITY. From an object to a place.”

Anatolia Tiles is a Canadian Company who imports ceramic tiles they got produced in Europe and Turkey and sell them in Canadian market. Recently they decided to sell their products in the U.S. market as well, especially in southern part of U.S.A. As a result of their strategic plans they decided to build a logistic center in Aliaga -Izmir/TURKEY as direct sea transport from south of Turkey to Southern U.S.A came out to be much cheaper than TIR transport.

The reconstruction of the city centre in Veszprém, Hungary by Veszprémi Építész Műhely Ltd., Főmterv Ltd. and Speos Ltd.

Sunday, February 12th, 2017

Article source: Veszprémi Építész Műhely Ltd.

In the 20th century the city management started to reconstruct the city centre twice but the reconstruction has never been finished.

Finally the reconstruction was finished a few years ago: we started to work on it in 2008 and it was finished in 2014.

You can see a long street in the city centre, on the one side of the street there is the old part of the city centre and on the other side there is a 20 storey building with the shopping center, which was built in 1970.

Tour & Taxis in Brussels, Belgium by Vincent Callebaut Architectures

1. TOUR ET TAXIS: TOWARDS A MIXED-USE ECO-NEIGHBORHOOD

Whereas most developing countries can write their future starting from a blank slate, European cities face the challenge of transforming their built heritage to secure their energy, social and economic transition towards post-carbon, circular and interdependent urban living.

It means being determined to act as forward thinkers, and to bring our new project “Tour & Taxis” into the 21st century in terms of uses, technological progress, social innovation, and sustainable building principles. Today’s architecture is capable of implementing “energy solidarity” between a piece of architectural heritage — industrial in this case — and a contemporary project. The latter provides the necessary energy to the former by integrating renewable energies, thus limiting carbon emissions as recommended by the COP 21.

Oulu Travel Centre in Finland by Architects Lahdelma & Mahlamäki + Architects m3

Sunday, February 5th, 2017

Article source: Architects Lahdelma & Mahlamäki

The design area is located by the railway, at the junction of City of Oulu’s urban fabric, where the low and small-scale district of Puu-Raksila meets with the more high-rising city centre. The design joins together these two different scales and construction methods, which, at the same time, creates an areal entity with a distinctive and attractive identity.
