Between forward-facing high-rise buildings and blast furnaces of the past the new Steelyard square forms the center of Belval Ouest, a city development project which is currently constructed in Luxembourg on the grounds of a former steel mill.

ROCKmagneten in Roskilde, Denmark by MVRDV & COBE

The MVRDV and COBE scheme for the transformation of a former concrete factory into a multifunctional creative hub was chosen winner of an international design competition. The masterplan proposes an informal transformation of the 45.000m2 site into a dense neighborhood, incl. 8.000m2 existing factory halls, organized around a plaza for events. Three new volumes will be added on top of the halls: The 11.000m2 ROCKmagneten consists of The Danish Rock Museum, The Roskilde Festival Folkschool incl. student housing, and the headquarters of the famous Roskilde Rock Festival. They share program in a public creative communal house. The museum with a total of 3.000m2 will be completed as the first phase in 2014.

Seixal City Hall in Portugal by NLA

The seixal city hall building is located on a site with a steep slope in the east-west direction and forms a group that provides facilities for the mayor and technical services and is also the workplace for some 700 council workers. The design was of two linked bodies of an atrium and distribution space. these include three levels above ground and are connected to the east in the first two.

FRIIS Aalborg City Centre in Denmark by C. F. Møller Architects

The city of Aalborg has received a new focal point with the Friis shopping centre, designed by C. F. Møller Architects. The shopping centre, which combines new property and a renovation of the former Magasin department store, covers a total area of 60,000 sq m. Of this, 21,000 sq m is occupied by the shopping centre itself, 4,000 sq m by the Cabinn hotel, 5,000 sq m by offices and 35,000 sq m by an underground car park with room for 850 cars.

Dutch success in Basel

The team of OKRA, Maxwan A+U, and Basler&Hofmann has won the competition for the concept design for the Basel city center. The proposal provides an overall view on quality of public realm in the city centre for the next decades, and focuses on creating a green and vibrant landscape city, providing spaces that create a ‘shared space 2.0’. The plan provides tools for transformation of a large area in the city centre, expanding from the train station SBB and the railway station Badischer Bahnhof on the other side of the river Rhine. Even more than today, the Basel city centre will be a focal point for the entire tri-national, expanding over the German and French borders.

The new Noain City Hall is equipped with passive and active systems of energy saving. The development of both systems was included from the early stages of design, so that the final outcome of the building is clearly determined by their presence. The project has been subject to an energy rating, resulting in a 60% saving.

Shade Pergolas and an Outdoor Pavilion for performance and community gathering are designed for an urban park in North Carolina. The form and structure reference the heritage of the local textile industry – its patterned fabric and the motion of the textile loom equipment. Purple heart wood, painted steel, copper sheet metal, brick, granite, and silicon bronze donor plaques are assembled with standard details in unique combinations to create a tailored pattern and image bound to its place.

Rubí Market and Town Hall Offices in Barcelona, Spain by MiAS Architects

Rubí local market is in a central urban position. It is in a triangular plot, which gives the market the same shape. In the northern side, before the intervention, there was an excavated unbuilt and residual space which was not used. The project proposes building an underground two-storeyed parking, connected to the existing one. Over the new parking, the enlargement of the market is built.
