Second Second City in Chicago, Illinois by Stewart Hicks and Allison Newmeyer of Design

Saturday, June 18th, 2011

Article source: Stewart Hicks

This project contends with the competing and overlaid desires for the site of the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago by creating a new tourist destination and scenario-planning infrastructure from the existing architecture. On the roof, a 1:25 miniature replica of Chicago is constructed. A clear mound protects the model, provides space for artificial weather equipment and creates unexpected visual connections between both Chicagos. Within the mound, the model acts as a simulator for various future scenarios.

Article source: Map-Lab, inc.

The International Living Future Institute launched the Living City Design Competition in 2010, seeking designs for our cities in the year 2035. map-lab’s submission was ResilienCity. ResilienCity seeks to set the vision for the future of Boston’s Innovation District, a new neighborhood built on greyfield and brownfield sites that will provide residences and workplaces for over 300,000 people. We have reached the tipping point where we need to think of the whole, not the self. We have arrived at a time when we need to stop behaving selfishly and begin to explore how we can all come together as a community to create environments that are culturally enriching, healthier, and equitable. We come back to nature to do this.

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Situated at the threshold of Hong Kong and Mainland China, Qianhai occupies a position of strategic significance in the Pearl River Delta. The planned intensification of transport through the site renders inevitable its emergence as a new center. The question is not whether Qianhai will develop, but how? If successful, a new city center in Qianhai could fulfill Shenzhen’s coastal ambitions and establish a node for interaction between various components of the PRD.

Xiang’he  Garden City – Park of the floating gardens

Ambitions

At this moment a masterplan for Xiang’he Garden City is developed. A new garden city of approximately 700 hectares will arise close to the future 7th ring of Beijing. Within the first phase of the development a park is projected, closely related to the water basins that are a result of clay reclamation by the existing brick factories. A steep slope along the north side of the factories will be a result of these activities that will affect the park design, since on the north side of the basins housing development is projected.

Harvest City, Republic of Haiti by Kevin Schopfer

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Since the tragic earthquake of 2010, Haiti has been the subject of worldwide attention.  All would agree, the devastation seems particularly cruel to this struggling country.  Massive relief efforts have been forthcoming and have demonstrated considerable generosity and determination from individuals, organizations and countries.  For Haiti to stabilize, this effort will require a consistent long term commitment.  There is no one solution to solve all of Haiti’s problems.  Rather it will take a thoughtful program of balance and renewal.  In the most simplistic terms, much attention has been focused of establishing basic ingredient for recovery.

  1. Redistribution of population
  2. Establish stable population zones
  3. Restructure agriculture /Fishing growth
  4. Generate new economic growth generators.
