For the first time in decades, Sault College has a new academic building. Essar Hall forms a gateway that announces the new energized spirit for learning at Sault College. Here, much needed new learning spaces support future-forward teaching pedagogies. Organizing the classrooms and labs spaces around common areas that promote casual learning and interdisciplinary idea exchanges emphasizes the connectivity, community, and engagement that generates a clear sense of identity and belonging. Situated prominently at the building entrance is a flexible exhibition hall that links classrooms with aviation and natural resource laboratories, a 100 seat lecture hall and administration support spaces. An additional 8,000 square feet of interactive learning commons is strategically distributed throughout the building providing essential flexible and dynamic learning spaces for students.
Hewitt Studios have recently completed a sustainable new-build workshop sporting an innovative and efficient ‘flat-pack’ timber structure.
The project is situated on the Holme Lacy campus of Herefordshire and Ludlow College and is designed to complement the nearby Straw Bale Cafe and Fast-Track Classrooms. It is used primarily for the maintenance of tractors and other agricultural machinery.
Initial site visits at the University of Idaho Pitkin Nursery revealed hoop houses, metal sheds and stacks of planter boxes. Beginning with the idea of a wood box floating on the undulating sea of the Palouse, the design team set out to stitch together the program, landscape and the materiality of Idaho forest products. The college wanted to extend their public outreach in addition to nursery research functions. The outstretched ramps and decks reach out to the landscape and invite the public and students to the building. The Sales Office was pulled through the wood screen as a way to express itself beyond the functions of classroom, offices, and social gathering. The weathering cedar wood screen that stands off the building was imagined as a modern western storefront. The repetition of stacked boxes was intriguing; we saw that as the piece that expressed the transition from working nursery to classroom. The cedar wood screen is the threshold element for faculty and students to step through the gap between the two elements; wood screen and black box.
West of Nantes, the new Collège Anne de Bretagne secondary school at St-Herblain stands out in the location as a feature linking a town park, various neighboring public utilities and the Loire valley landscape. The project fits into the site through an irregular base dressed in timber powerfully set into the slightly sloping land. This rough ground floor bears a much simpler looping figure that tapers on the upper floor housing the classrooms. The base blends in with the immediate vicinity while the upstairs area looks out over the landscape further afield.
Set on the Etampes plateau with a view as far as the eye can see across the natural landscape and farmland, the new Lycée d’Etampes secondary school is the first building in the built-up Paris area visible from the Beauce plain.
The building stands on the boundary between the two regions and itself has that dual status as a kind of built-up landscape, despite its large scale.

Bergen University College brings together the engineer, teacher and health educations in one new building complex. The college is built on a former railway depot site, where new buildings blend in, regards being taken to the layout of the rails, with the original structures.
The school is designed as a serpentine shape winding its way through the old structures, thus creating intimate courtyards and nice outdoor spaces for the Kronstad quarter.
Ambition
The assignment was the realization of a new building for the VMBO- school as part of the existing Beatrix College in Tilburg. With the population prognosis of the municipality in mind, the new building possibly had to be removed after 15 years, but the life span had to be as large as 40 years. Therefore the budget was based on temporary housing. The combined design- and building time was limited to one year and the existing buildings had to be able to function during construction. Key elements of the Beatrix College for this construction were: exploitation and maintenance with a sustainable and above all healthy school.
The design assignment for the Gerrit Rietveld College consists of the new build of a secondary school with sporting facilities for about 1200 pupils, and for a smaller part of social and commercial facilities for the neighborhood. The new build is situated in the leafy district of Tuindorp, at the eastern side of Utrecht. The plot is bordered by a public greenbelt, a through-road – the Eykmanlaan with a new parallel road – a slow traffic route, a newly to be developed residential district, and to the north at some distance, a railway.
The extension of Farelcollege in Ridderkerk designed by KCAP Architects&Planners has been officially opened last week. The new building for general secondary education has already been in use since last September. Providing 1,700 m2 over three floors, the school accommodates 400 students within 12 classrooms with an additional flexible classroom on the ground floor. The dramatic entrance creates a new main entry for the college.
