Extrude in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea by studio_GAON

Saturday, May 16th, 2015

Article source: studio_GAON

The site is near Han-river in Changwoo-dong, located at the city boundary of Hanam. It was left unused because many decades ago, the road along the river had been widened, making this land end in a weird shape. The land looked like a last piece of round pizza or a cheese cake piece on a neat dish. Because of the form, the land remained empty until we intervened. When we visited the site with the clients, it felt as if the land beckoned us to make use of it. This triangular area was about 123㎡, and after we offset and extruded the shape of the land, it became a triangular prism with 70㎡ of possible building area.

Weleda North America by Specht Harpman

Thursday, May 14th, 2015

Article source: Specht Harpman

Specht Harpman designed Weleda’s North American headquarters within the shell of a 19th-century factory along the Hudson River. One primary design intention was to expose and highlight the raw beauty of the original heavy timber structure, its brick walls, and large windows. Our interventions respect the character of the original building, while clearly registering a new use.

Sin El Fil in Beirut, Lebanon by SOMA Architects

Thursday, April 9th, 2015

Article source: SOMA Architects

The three volumes of the mixed use compound are situated in Sin el Fil, Lebanon, near an important junction of highways and major roadways to the East of Beirut. The site also provides panoramic views toward the center of Beirut to the East and to the mountains to the West. In order to take advantage of this unique location, and the panoramic views, the project is conceived as three volumes arrayed about a central focal point in the center of the site. Each volume is in turn chamfered toward the outside, creating terraces toward their respective views, while on the ground floor, the buildings chamfer in, creating impressive cantilevers and freeing up large areas of outdoor space. The building directly along the highway serves as an office tower with a large retail base extending along the highway, while the other two buildings provide apartments. This positioning creates three basic outdoor spaces: one for a public drop odd, one for a private drop off, and a third used as a playground and collective garden space.

City of Paris approves MVRDV’s restructuring of 1970s superblock in Montparnasse

Saturday, March 7th, 2015

Article source: MVRDV

The City of Paris has given the green light to MVRDV’s ambitious plan for the restructuring of the mixed-use urban block Vandamme Nord at Gaîté-Montparnasse in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. The large building complex, built in the 1970s, comprises a shopping centre, offices, a public library, a hotel and an underground car park, all of which will be retrofitted so as to reintroduce the human scale to an urban environment largely characterized by wide boulevards and monolithic structures. In addition to the face-lift provided by a new facade, the accessibility and programmatic identity of each of these programs will be improved through a total internal reorganisation of the complex. The building’s restructuring also foresees extending the existing commercial spaces, creating new office space, a new kindergarten, an expanded library, a conference centre, as well as a number of social housing units.

AVARICUM commercial and residential complex in Bourges, France by Arte Charpentier Architectes

Saturday, March 7th, 2015

Article source: v2com

The Avaricum project is located in a strategic space, on the threshold between the medieval and modern city. The new gateway to the heart of the city of Bourges, in central France, Avaricum reveals itself to the city as a development hub and a unique opportunity to strengthen the commercial appeal of the city centre. In the heart of the space, Arte Charpentier Architects and the Blatter architectural firm designed a major commercial and residential project. The complex extends the city’s existing pedestrian zone toward the north while alleviating the landscape discontinuities caused by post-war urban development.

IVB Operational service building in Innsbruck, Austria by Peter Lorenz Ateliers

Saturday, March 7th, 2015

Article source: Peter Lorenz Ateliers

THE MAIN FEATURES OF THIS DESIGN ARE:

  • The alignment with the surrounding and the incorporation of the street space
  • The establishment of a prominent, protruding corner at the inter-section [Pastorstraße – driveway of the company premises] that highlights the entrance of the new service building. The view into the garage will be reduced significantly, giving it a technical identity through the merging of the building with the operating trams below.
  • The planting of a new grove of trees along Pastorstraße will embed the building in a park-like surrounding which aligns with the alley of existing trees along Pastorstraße. The planting will consolidate the diffluent street area.
  • The façade is characterized by the vitality of carefully matched shades of colour. The quality criteria for the façade (functionality, aesthetics and liveliness) are developed.
