The Abu Dhabi Commercial and Cultural Expo Center by Michael Arellanes II

Friday, January 2nd, 2015

Article source: Michael Arellanes II

The method and means of tectonic principles that govern the dispersion of mass and surface in the project proposal are subject to folding and overlapping of curved tectonic bodies. These tectonic and massing arrangements are intended to create paths of intersection and to architecturally express a forward movement projected toward the sea. The architectural formation is governed by articulation of space for the purpose of international expositions and cultural showcases. Retail and entertainment are also integrated as part of the seascape dynamic Expo Center. As the multi-massed complex is a dispersion of activates ranging from shopping, dining, expositions, and yacht clubs, it transforms the edge of Abu Dhabi into an iconic sea formation. Iconic architectural expressions within the proposal are articulated in the sail composition of being in flight at the precipice of the sea. The flowing sail architectural node within the complex becomes the epicenter of the showcase functions while enhancing the viewing, dining, and entertainment experience.

PUSHED SLAB in Paris, France by MVRDV

Friday, November 28th, 2014

Article source: MVRDV

The Pushed Slab is located between two completely different urban grids: the dense city fabric of blocks and streets in the North and the loose urban fabric in the south with its clear defined and straightforward infrastructure. The design is based on the requested office program and the energy requirements. The project combines proven energy efficiency technologies with individual office floors and outside spaces such as patios, balconies and a garden. The building is highly flexible offering three cores and a central lobby; it can be rented out to one or various tenants without structural changes.

The Digit by Anagram Architects

Wednesday, November 5th, 2014

Article source: Anagram Architects

The world of corporate marketing communication is all about grabbing eyeballs and our clients are one of the largest outdoor media companies in the country. Today, through outdoor or out-of-home (OOH) advertising, corporate brand identities are ubiquitous to the urban scape. An extremely potent form of communication, it relies heavily on high visual impact in  a fleetingly brief engagement.  Its clamorous visual language acts as an overlay or imprint on the urban built language. It intrepidly uses built volume and urban inserts to increase its visibility or to accent its messaging. Its contribution to urban culture ranges from adding to its chaotic visual cacophony to inspiring its street art.

MESSER Gas Filling Station in Budapest, Hungary by A4 Studio Ltd.

Friday, October 24th, 2014

Article source: A4 Studio Ltd.

The building process of the Oxygen and Dissousgas Company (ODV) started in 1952 in Újpest, the brownfield belt of Budapest. Because of its proximity to the Danube river Újpest was the area of industrial developments already in the 1920’s and 30’s (tannery, thread factory, lamp factory). The valuable original brick buildings were completed through continuous development until 1963. The MESSER company – the leading manufacturer and distributor of special technical and medical gases in Europe – purchased the site in 1988. Our company, A4 Studio accepted the commission in 2008 for designing the new production hall, laboratory, depositories and offices on the 47 000 m2 site. Our first design approaches reckoned with a new building (see images) but after an accurate architectural and structural analysis we decided in agreement with the investor to utilize the original brick buildings with modern extensions.  Design process happened in 2010-11 (see images). The refurbishment was completed in the summer of 2012 with 21st century architectural means and materials (anthracite colored metal cladding, glass surfaces, exposed concrete), the design indicates old and new structures.
