9th & Thomas in Seattle, Washington by Olson Kundig

Wednesday, February 19th, 2020

Article source: Olson Kundig

“The transparent and accessible podium level of 9th & Thomas is articulated in an eclectic style that references the evolutionary process of a community like South Lake Union. The building has parts and pieces that move and change, open and close. It’s intentionally inviting walk-in traffic, and my hope is that the public lobby slows down the neighborhood and establishes a sense of place.” – Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Design Principal

Tomtebrygga in Oslo, Norway by LPO Architects

Tuesday, November 12th, 2019

Article source: LPO Architects

Situation, History And Project Facts

The urban development and transformation of Bjørvika, starting with the Snøhetta Opera, forms an entire new neighborhood in Oslo. The brownfield site along the former harbor basin south of the central station rail tracks, where the Akerselva river meets the fjord, is reclaimed – making the shorefront once again available to the public.

The B1 plot of the Bjørvika masterplan sits along the eponymous promontory Paulsenkaia, named after wholesaler H.A.H. Paulsen, and is part of a stretch of land that includes the new Munch museum at the outermost tip of land.

An international architectural competition for the museum was won by (now) estudio Herreros and included the adjacent plots B4 and B1. LPO arkitekter was in charge of the proceeding zoning plan.

Dr. Schaer in Burgstall, Italy by monovolume architecture+design

Wednesday, October 30th, 2019

Article source: monovolume architecture+design

The company of the Dr. Schär AG is located in the southern part of the commercial area of Burgstall. Because of the steady growth of the company also the space requirement increases and therefore the existing administration block has been extended. Due to the limited base area the building was conceived on three floors. The characteristic of the design of the new part of the building is the sophisticated, restrained and linear architecture. The glass facades create a new light and clear look of the building and also of the whole company. The sun protection is made of slanting glass falkes, it is aimed at a kind of double façade.

The visible Attica panels of the ceiling are covered with white tiles, the flat roofs are designed as green roofs.

121 East 22nd Street in New York by OMA

Thursday, October 3rd, 2019

Article source: OMA

121 East 22nd is OMA’s first ground up building and residential complex in Manhattan. The design was conceived from its site which straddles two separate and different neighborhoods: a quiet residential area surrounding Gramercy Park, an enclosed and private garden, and the bustling commercial space around Madison Square Park, a public park that hosts an array of activities.

The L-shaped site posed an opportunity to be informed by the two neighborhoods while activating three street fronts. The concept emerges from this dualistic condition, referencing Cubist artwork, in which objects are viewed from a multitude of viewpoints rather than a single one to represent the subject in a greater context. As such, the North Tower conveys the meeting of the two neighborhoods, realized through two interlocking planes that come together at 23rd and Lexington to form a distinct, three-dimensional corner.

Grid Commercial Building in Nishinomiya, Japan by T-Square Design Associates

Thursday, October 3rd, 2019

Article source: T-Square Design Associates

This small five story commercial building is located on the front of one of the symbol station of Hankyu railway Kobe line in Nishinomiya, Japan. One of the characteristic part of the site is that it is open to almost all directions which enables the building to be seen from any angles. This led to choose concrete finished frame structure that gives a strong structural image along with the toleration to be seen from any angle. Another important reason must be mentioned here. Two old buildings that stood at the same place before served as an advertisement building and these ad’s were very important income for the client. Moreover, as an architect, it is difficult to prevent or control the client from putting ad’s, so if the building is going to be another “advertisement building” sooner or later, a simple rule was incorporated into the façade design. The ad’s must be put in between the concrete frames to picturize the ad’s with concrete structure. And the depth of the concrete frames also play an important role to picturize the ad’s. The two old uncontrolled advertisement buildings were changed to a controlled single advertisement building, and this whole new “advertisement building” will be the new symbol building for this station area.

Greentown Tangshan Blue Bay Town Life Experience Hall in China by GOA

Thursday, September 26th, 2019

Article source: GOA

Tangshan Blue Bay Town Project is located on the southeast coast of Leting County, Tangshan City and on the north side of Tangshan Bay International Tourism Island. As a commercial center of the project, the town center is located at the southwest corner of the project base, where Xiangying Road and Haijing Avenue join at 70 degrees in a narrow and long triangle land to define the land area with functions including life experience hall and community facilities.

As the first portal to communicate with city interface, we consider how to make the architecture efficient and reasonable: 1. A suitable site; 2. A landmark city interface; 3. Overall project architecture style to effectively connect neo Chinese style; 4. To create multi-layer public space and urban life.

The interface facing the city road is set with two strips and opens to the road intersection to form a display surface with an open frontcourt space and a shallow mirror pool as a buffer zone with the city environment, presenting a quiet and elegant posture.
