Conversion instead of new construction in Germany by HerrmannsArchitekten

Thursday, June 18th, 2020

Article source: HerrmannsArchitekten

The task is to investigate options for the subsequent use of the former kindergarten building from 1965 in the city center of the little town of Urbar, Germany. A mix of uses is desired, in particular a meeting place for the citizens. But first there is the question of whether demolition/new construction or renovation/remodeling is the better solution for the building. This fundamental decision – demolition or reuse – questions the handling of the building stock resource.

9th & Thomas in Seattle, Washington by Olson Kundig

Wednesday, February 19th, 2020

Article source: Olson Kundig

“The transparent and accessible podium level of 9th & Thomas is articulated in an eclectic style that references the evolutionary process of a community like South Lake Union. The building has parts and pieces that move and change, open and close. It’s intentionally inviting walk-in traffic, and my hope is that the public lobby slows down the neighborhood and establishes a sense of place.” – Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA, Design Principal

The Ark in Budapest, Hungary by NAPUR architect LtD.

Thursday, February 13th, 2020

Article source: NAPUR architect LtD.

The long term development idea of the canoeing sports was to create a multifunctional site that would be suitable for both landing and stopping, to replace the sites that had previously disappeared along the Danube River. In the second half of the last century, the current headquarters of the Federation operated as a boat house and several clubs were located on what is now the Moscow Promenade. Unfortunately, in the 90s these facilities ceased to exist on this section of the Danube’s Pest side. The Federation has developed a concept for a floating yacht moored in front of the Federation Building, with a porting site, changing rooms, ship storage, training and education center, community and exhibition space. By using both domestic and EU funds, the Alliance’s wholly owned business companies have implemented this niche development. As a result of the development, we have created a kayak-canoe-themed and speculated water tour stop, community space, exhibition space and training center, which is able to present the history of canoeing, canoeing, and events for any athlete. whether it is a everyday water hiker a young athlete or a professional competitor -, or can be used as a starting or stopping place.

Sodam-dong Complex Community Center (Snail house) in Seoul, South Korea by DAAIN Architecture Group Inc.

Article source: DAAIN Architecture Group Inc.

Community Node : Third Place

Cities are connected to various functions such as the square, architecture, and space through diverse paths. Social relationships are generated by the nodes between these paths and elements (e.g., square, architecture, and space). Multi-layered social spaces trigger diverse new relationships from the users who utilize community facilities. Multi-layered social spaces include the circular flow of human traffic made of a circular ring structure, places where social relationships are generated such as culture square or green bridge, places that do not refine actions such as convergence garden, and relationship space, which can be public or private depending on the location and characteristics of it.
