Friday, September 8th, 2017

Article source: Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos

There is a clear trend in leading cities worldwide towards urban transformation that is above all the result of social and demographic evolution, reconciling densities and land uses to trigger development.

“Parque Toreo” was designed as a mixed-use complex and as a prime example of this phenomenon of urbanization. The site is located in Naucalpan, State of Mexico, the most developed suburban area with significant commerce to the north of Mexico City. It measures 46,793.57 sqm and includes access to main roads such as: Periférico Norte, Río San Joaquín Avenue and Parque de Chapultepec Avenue.

Pearl Marzouq Complex in Ras, Kuwait by PAD10 Architects

Friday, March 3rd, 2017

Article source: PAD10 Architects

Of resemblance to the social housing typology, Pearl-Marzouq complex, ‘Lou’lou’at Al-Marzouq’, embodied the complete opposite; a private housing for the affluent. Built in the early 70’s on al-Ras, a peninsula-like landform; with remoteness from the city center, al-Deira, yet at a distance close enough to be gazed at. With its red roof tiles and warm sandstone walls, the building infused a Mediterranean feel to the Arabian Gulf. For white collar expats partaking in the spur of Kuwait’s economy, it was home away from home. Similarly, it was convincing for well-to-do locals to substitute the privacy of their single residences, seeking a new ‘urbanized’ experience, by claiming their prime villa-like duplexes and penthouses with an elevated vantage point back to the city and its sea. The excitement inherent to this dense typology, was further amplified by subverting the building law to equate the number of floors to skip-stop elevator corridors. Connecting midway to duplex apartments, the area (sqm) was almost doubled, as the building height from its surrounding.

Stadthalle Hall F in Vienna, Austria by Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architekten

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2017

Article source: Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architekten

The new Hall F is an ingenious addition to the previously less developed southeast side of the monumental complex of Wiener Stadthalle, creating impact even on its own. The concert, show, dance, fashion and even circus venue sits 2,000 spectators. Furthermore, congresses and conventions can be facilitated. Even though it is a particularly appealing urban location, the new edifice does not steal the spotlight from Roland Rainer’s hall, which was built half a century prior.
