Het Kielzog Cultural and Municipal Complex in Hoogezand, The Netherlands by De Zwarte Hond

Friday, October 21st, 2016

Article source: De Zwarte Hond

The Municipality of Hoogezand-Sappemeer has been given a single, prominent, public building in which a theatre, an arts centre, a library and the town hall are accommodated. In the dynamic heart of this Dutch municipality citizens are served a wide palette of services, information, education, culture and recreation. Existing elements, such as the theatre auditorium, dating back to the 1980s, are re-used in the new development. The adjacent town hall, at the moment still in an outdated state, will ultimately undergo a complete transformation. In the meantime the existing premises and the new build function as a single entity. The connecting, central street forms a temporary solution to the gaps in the present infrastructure. Both in terms of use, as well as technological exploitation and urban design, the new central building has great advantages for Hoogezand-Sappemeer.

Fahle House in Tallinn, Estonia by KOKO architects

Sunday, September 18th, 2016

Article source: KOKO architects

Fahle house, which was designed by KOKO, is one of the characteristic examples of architecture during the recent economic boom in Estonia. It is a building that from an architectural point of view was ambitious, from a real estate development point of view risky, and from the heritage protection point of view controversial and received a lot of attention from the public. Situated at one of the main entrances to Tallinn, between the airport and city centre, Fahle house draws the attention of every passer-by. The building is part of the complex of a former cellulose and paper factory where the most outstanding building is the tall and voluminous boiler house (1926) built from limestone and designed by architect Erich Jacoby.

Life Science Centre of Vilnius University in Lithuania by Architektūros linija

Friday, September 16th, 2016

Article source: Architektūros linija

The key idea of the Life Science Centre architecture are the science and teaching complex modules forming the public space layout and comprising the integral whole like different cells of the matter. Cube-shaped volumes in open spaces of Saulėtekis, reiterating the natural context and building a humanist, traditional urban structure characteristic of the city of Vilnius, resemble a feature of the historical Vilnius University ensemble – a cosy inner courtyard. The volumes comprising the square perimeter and the entrance to the building are moved out over the glass vestibule and the merging space unites the areas of the main lobby, the courtyard and the passage, seamlessly linking them with the environment.

SM Town in Seoul, Korea by Yong Ju Lee, Steven Chang, Kyungsun Lee

Tuesday, August 9th, 2016

Article source: Yong Ju Lee

Since it is the first branch of SM Town and a flagship store, a future-oriented image was depicted on the facade. It is the first case where the patterns of the Celebrity Shop “SUM” are applied for the first time. A unique idea that can help raise awareness of the brand was needed. As such, many thoughts were given to the details and design, including the size of the pattern, the space in between, selection of material and the location of the artists’ names of SM on the facade.
