Ekaterinensky Congress Center in Krasnodar, Russia by Piuarch

Sunday, July 24th, 2016

Article source: Piuarch

Piuarch’s design of the new Ekaterinensky Congress Center in Krasnodar, Russia, has been appointed for construction.

Located on the banks of the Kuban River, the design proposes a three level cultural complex, with a total floor area of 2,840 square meters. The plans include a conference hall with a capacity of 720 seats – which can be set up in different configurations – as a foyer, a restaurant, a bar and service areas, all the while offering a scenic view of the river bay on the side of the city, and a new pedestrian plaza where the entrance to the center will be located.

The building will also feature terraces on the roof and outdoor spaces on the ground floor, which allow for the expansion of the internal functions.

The project has offered Piuarch the opportunity to activate the relationship between the city and the river by designing a connection among the natural water environment, the coastal parks, and the urban area: reconfiguring the city’s interaction with the river.

Seoul Urban Womb in Daebang-dong, South Korea by Architects For Urbanity

Friday, July 22nd, 2016

Article source: Architects For Urbanity

Cityscape

The site is located at Daebang-dong, where U.S. army base ‘Camp Grey’ had been located for 55 years until the retrocession in 2007. Located adjacent to this site was Seoul Women Shelter which accommodated prostitutes, runaway dementia elders, and vagrants from 1962 to 1998. The shelter was converted to Seoul Women Plaza. This is a symbolic place where tragic division of the Korean peninsula, poverty and hardships of woman in the era is accumulated and conveys the agony of Korean modern history. The purpose of this project to turn this gloomy and ‘deathlike’ space into a place of resurrection, a site of nurturing space that will foster welfare of women and families.

Philips Business Innovation Centre FiftyTwoDegrees in Nijmegen, Netherlands by Mecanoo architecten b.v.

Article source: Mecanoo architecten b.v.

Knowledge centre

At the start of the new millennium, Philips Semiconductors (now NXP) wanted to expand its current production and research site in Nijmegen by creating a new knowledge centre for the development of semiconductors for the electronics industry. The existing production site is sealed off and fenced in for security reasons. The new knowledge centre, where technology, science, culture, work, living and leisure come together, fosters chance encounters and collaboration with diverse parties. The name of the complex, FiftyTwoDegrees, refers to the site’s 52nd degree of latitude, which like the ambition of the initiators, spans the entire world.

International Conference Center in Dakar, Senegal by Tabanlioglu Architects

Saturday, December 12th, 2015

Article source: Tabanlioglu Architects

On the west coast of Middle Africa, Senegal is by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and  Senegal River borders the country to the east and north.  The capital city of Senegal, Dakar is located at the westernmost tip of the country on the Cap-Vert peninsula. The congress center first opened on November 2014, for the 15th Francophone Assembly where 75 world presidents met. Typical geography and the natural values has been the inspiration for the project. Extraordinary, characteristic Baobab trees of Senegal are distinctive with their enormous girth. Their massive trunks can grow to circumferences of 25 meters or more. Their second distinctive feature is great longevity. Baobabs live well over a thousand years, so that they have been important landmarks in Senegal’s dry savanna plain; in oral histories baobabs are cited as loci of battles, or as marking borders between states. Many of these historic trees have been classified as historic monuments by the Ministry of Culture.

Bálna (formerly known as CET / Central European Time). Bálna is also a synonym for a whale. The Mixed Use Development Bálna at the Közraktárak between the Petofi and the Szabadság Bridge is both. The Bálna concept refers to Budapest as an important metropolitan centre in the heart of Central Europe. The Bálna shape refers to the smooth and friendly streamlined body of a whale. The new Bálna development has the potential to put Budapest once again on the map of the world. Name and shape of the Bálna symbolizes its cultural potential and commercial pole position in one of the best preserved cities in the world.
