The design for the new incubator and multi-tenanted business premises on the university campus in Wageningen offers knowledge-intensive technological start-ups in the agricultural and food industry a place for research and open innovation.
Plus Ultra’ means ‘ever further’ and symbolises the drive to continue innovating. Kadans Science Partner is developing Plus Ultra in collaboration with the Wageningen University & Research Centre on the southern perimeter of the university campus. The building has a floor area of over 7,000 m² for offices, laboratories, (partly) multipurpose technology halls and various meeting areas.
Brett Farrow Architect has designed the new headquarters for C3 Bancorp in the Southern California coastal community of Encinitas.
The locally owned bank was designed as a combination retail branch, corporate offices and semi-civic space. Facing directly onto Coast Highway 101, the building uses custom white concrete to echo the nearby coastal bluffs while large operable glass areas create a transparent connection between the interior work spaces and lushly planted courtyards and atrium.
Marine grade stainless steel cladding was custom tinted and combined with western red cedar at the ceilings and eaves.
Archiect Nadja Zürcher in cooperation with Vera Gloor AG designed a series of all-glass conference and huddle rooms for a top Zurich-based firm, and commissioned WSDG to do acoustic consulting, treatments and A/V integration for these spaces as well as in the surrounding office space to create rooms that were comfortable to hold meetings and video conferences in, as well as spaces where employees can work comfortably and quietly in the open office space.
The Place, like its name, brands itself as a hotel that creates a unique visitor experienced that embodies the specific identity of each place. This specificity of place is central to Mecanoo’s “People, Place, Purpose” design philosophy, which emphasizes users, a holistic understanding of the social, historical and physical context, and a response to current and future building functions. For each assignment, our goal is to seek out the secret of the location to create a unique design that strengthens the distinct identity of the context.
In keeping with this design philosophy, Mecanoo’s interiors for The Place hotels in other cities all embody a unique sense of place: The Place in Tainan reinterprets the historic city’s rich streetscape; in Yilan, the hotel is located in the National Center for Traditional Arts and draws its inspiration from local craftsmanship. By contrasting old and new, mixing of west and east, the hotel becomes a contemporary interpretation of a traditional art form.
In the heart of Cape Town’s bustling CBD, the property at 118 St George’s mall is not one building, but a consolidation of two. A “Cape Edwardian” building, estimated to have been completed in the early 1940s, stands on the corner of St Georges Mall and Longmarket Street, and is flanked by an Art Deco counterpart which was designed by the architectural firm Walgate & Elsworth, who designed the Table Mountain Cableway stations, for the offices of the United Building Society and completed c1938. While the characteristic external elements of the existing buildings have remained unchanged, like the Edwardian teak windows, the Art Deco granite façade and the noteworthy bronze portal doors framing the entrance, the interiors were sadly destroyed in the decades of reuse and reinvention of the space.
Opening of the new Zalando Headquarters in Berlin “We want a house that we can occupy” – that was the competition briefing given to HENN for the new Zalando Headquarters in Berlin in 2015. It is more than simply a new office space for 2,500 staff members belonging to Europe’s leading online fashion platform. Rather, a space that embodies the spirit of the original start-up, that is flexible, dynamic and unites the company’s divisions which were previously scattered across the city, under one roof.
The core of the main building is the central atrium, which shifts its openings along its vertical ascension, thus drawing daylight to the public areas below. The central lobby is flanked by a grand staircase with integrated seating and lounge areas which can also be used for events. The atrium in combination with the adjacent auditorium, create a spatial continuum that extends over numerous floors, thus enhancing the users flexibility.
As the headquarters of Cyrus Tang Foundation (CTF) in mainland China, the project is a complex which integrates multiple functional spaces, including the foundation's offices, a museum for displaying various gifts that the foundation has received, and spaces for holding exchange activities with its college members, including exhibitions, conferences, and training, etc.
Situated at the central area of East Tai Lake Ecological Park in Wujiang District, Suzhou, China, it enjoys favorable site conditions and beautiful landscape. The design focuses on the integration with the surrounding environment, inherits CTF's mission of serving disadvantaged communities with love and passing on the spirit of giving, and produces a “dissolved” and green building.

Yiwu, in China’s Zhejiang province, has established itself internationally for its strong economy, as the world’s largest wholesale commodities market. Domestically, it is traditionally known as a city of trade, thus making it an integral part of the country’s ‘Belt and Road Initiative.’ While being a hub of growing international commerce, the city decided in 2018 that it would focus on culture to further elevate its soft power, and hosted an international competition to design the ‘Yiwu Grand Theater.’ MAD Architects, led by Ma Yansong, competed against four other global architecture firms, coming out ahead of Arata Isozaki & Associates, Atelier Christian de Portzamparc, GMP, and KDG, to secure the project.
