Article source: Miro Rivera Architects

The addition and renovation of the Texas Exes Alumni Center represents a significant expansion to the 1980s facility, designed by Charles Moore and Richard Dodge. The project complements the architectural sensibilities of the existing building with an updated material sensibility on the interior while taking advantage of the unique siting of the alumni center in relation to both the Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium to the east and Shoal Creek to the west, as well as creating a strong connection to the adjacent Texas Cowboys Pavilion, also designed by Miró Rivera Architects.

Porto Olimpico in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by Girimun Architects

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014

Article source: Girimun Architects

As part of a package of investments for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the regeneration of 85 hectares of land near the old docks will create more than 1 million sqm of apartments, hotels, office buildings and a convention centre. The project addresses two moments: the completion of support facilities for the 2016 Olympic Games (10,600-room accommodation for media and referees, a media-centre and 3 to 5-star hotels) and its transformation post-Games into a vibrant mixed-use extension of the city centre. A green loop circuit of public spaces embraces the whole master plan encouraging pedestrian and bicycle use by linking the various dissociated sites and connecting the whole area to the nearby waterfront of the revitalized docks.

EPFL Quartier Nord, SwissTech Convention Center in Ecublens, Switzerland by Richter · Dahl Rocha & Associés

Friday, July 4th, 2014

Article source: Richter · Dahl Rocha & Associés

On the eastern edge of the site, student housing and commercial and service areas provide a clear border on the public plaza. Extending to the south to include the Metro station, shops and restaurants are sheltered by a covered gallery with the hotel and student lodgings above. The large scale of the building is mediated through a series of articulations and variations in height of the different volumes that make up the complex. Only the central bodies of the building are carried up to level eight at the top. The outer facades clad in serigraphed glass and aluminium louvers maintain a clear dialogue with the convention center, the coloured window jambs anticipate the exuberance of the inner courtyard.

Modern design with functionality and sustainability

The ceilings and walls inside the Qatar National Convention Centre are clad with 6,000 m² of architectural wire mesh made by Haver & Boecker. To meet the exclusive requirements of the room’s ambience, the designers chose bronze wire mesh. The high-quality aesthetic of the architectural mesh, as well as the excellent long-life properties, non-flammability, easy maintenance and recyclability, made choosing Haver & Boecker wire mesh an easy decision for the client.
