OMR Art Gallery in Colonia Roma Norte, Mexico City by Max von Werz Architect

Sunday, December 11th, 2016

Article source: Max von Werz Architect

After 30 years in a turn-of-the-century Porfirian villa, the contemporary art gallery OMR decided to move to a new location. The design strategy was to preserve the existing brutalist building as much as possible, adjusting some interior details so as to bring out the character of the building and transform it into a generous exhibition space. A vertical one story extension accommodates all back-of-house functions. The result is a sober project that amplifies the character of the original building whilst preparing it for a new cultural life without resorting to the international conventions of the sterile white cube.

Norwegian Mountaineering Center in Møre og Romsdal, Norway by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter

Saturday, September 24th, 2016

Article source: Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter

The Norwegian Mountaineering Center is anchored in an innovative interpretation of nature’s fantastic dimensions and the dramatic experience of mountaineering. The design of the building is based on its function as a mountaineering center and gathering place for both locals and visitors. This provides the structure with a characteristic volume communicating its contents with exciting and unique geometrical expression. Its outer skin is clad in a uniform surface, highlighting its originality and situation next to the train tracks of Raumabanen and the station area in the Åndalsnes town center.

Au Pont Rouge in Saint Petersburg, Russia by Cheungvogl

Wednesday, September 21st, 2016

Article source: Cheungvogl

Hong Kong based architecture studio Cheungvogl has created an open exhibition retail space around a robotic system in the 110 year old iconic department store, Au Pont Rouge in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Completed in 1907, Au Pont Rouge located along the Red Bridge on River Moika was built in the tradition of great European department stores such as Galleries Lafayette in Paris or Selfridges in London. Following the revolution in 1919, the building was renamed and converted into Volodarsky Sewing Factory and in the 1930s, the original cupola was demolished. In 2011, the cupola was reconstructed and the building underwent functional and architectural transformations to restore Au Pont Rouge to its original state as a world class department store in Saint Petersburg.

The Lexicon in Shanghai, China by MA2

Thursday, August 11th, 2016

Article source: MA2

The conceptual design for shanghai is a theoretical exercise in thematic processes, an investigation into architectural language as a lexical device governed by thematic parameters and syntactical structures. The lexicon is rather a series of architectural devices and tectonics composed as an interface for a subject and object experiencer. These tectonics thread through an arrangement of digital art and light sculptures as a syntax of meaning and definition to the overarching architecture. The correlation between lexical properties and syntactic structures are modes of operation in which the architecture emerges. Meaning and experience are not limited by surface and material association; but when art and technology are introduced, the system of thematic structure becomes visible in its lexical and syntax relationship. The art work in the form of digital projection, light sculpture, and diverse mediums perform as aspectual properties, unlike the thematic tectonic shapes and form. They become interface entities; these entities are mediators between spaces and the architectural body. The subject experiencer correlates the differences in the art and tectonic expression, but the event in which these entities project are undefined allowing emergence in activity to develop and operate.

MÉNAGE À TROIS in Paris, France by Tomas Ghisellini Architetti

The new (rediscovered) wings of the Hôtel de Galliffet

Mirror reflection: strategy of lightness

The new architectural wings of the Hôtel de Galliffet will be enigmatic and surprising appearances.

Logics of composition, materials and formal repertoire push the architectural bodies towards an expressive vocabulary for which the terms of lightness and permeability prevail.

The strategy of inclusion aims to give the new buildings a kind of perceptive dematerialization; this way proceeding the partial clogging of the courts will assume a character of agreement and co-operation rather than imposition.
