Article source: gmp · Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner

With a total of 14 halls and 140,000 m² of exhibition space, the new conference and exhibition center is one China’s largest exhibition complexes. Its symmetrical layout designed in the form of an H by the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) links the urbanity of the Hongdao district in the north with the coastal landscape of Jiaozhou Bay in the south. Its structure and design combine the logistically complex exhibition area into a single unit. The ensemble’s centerpiece is the 40 meter high entrance hall with its curved membrane roof that has a 93 meter wide span.

Understory at The Spheres is a multifunctional exhibit and visitor center designed to tell the story of The Spheres, Amazon’s iconic and unique insertion into the heart of Seattle. The exhibit unravels the complexity of the architecture and engineering and the very idea behind bringing people closer to nature on a daily basis in the heart of the city. The 3,883-square-foot exhibit is situated at the base of one of The Spheres, providing a fly-through of the orbicular buildings above and something the visitor won’t get in The Spheres themselves, extreme close-up, and intimate footage of the plants in an interpretive and immersive experience.

Shenzhen Longhua Book City is the sixth Book City Building in Shenzhen with ~46,000m2 building area.  It is set to become a new local cultural hub which is more than a place of reading, but also a place for innovative design workshops, leisure, entertainment, child education, and commercial.  From design initiation, we hope that the design would be able to provoke dialogues between different mediums: between nature and people, art and culture, space and sensation, et cetera.  By looking into the past, present and future of Book City culture, our design aims to rejuvenate the daily life of citizens and help them to rediscover the joy of reading by bringing them a brand new reading experience, through a smart architecture that can breathe (natural ventilation), grow (flexibility), and understand the needs of readers (interactive).
