OFF GRID RETREAT in Appalachian Ohio by Midland Architecture

Saturday, May 2nd, 2015

Article source: Midland Architecture

Description:

This 900 square foot off grid retreat, situated on the family’s cattle farm in Appalachian Ohio, blends old and new technologies to create a self-sustaining home. South facing glazing in the living room provides views across a seven acre lake, and is also integral to the passive solar design which generates heat when coupled with the concrete finish floors. Additional sustainable features include a fresh water cistern supplied by a natural spring that runs along the building site; electricity generated by a solar cell array; and spray foam insulated walls and ceilings. The exterior is clad with a Corten metal standing seam roof and burnt cedar siding with Douglas fir columns. The interior layout features two bedrooms and a single bath, along with a great room and kitchen.

Richmond house by Newline Design

Tuesday, December 16th, 2014

Article source: Newline Design

On a corner allotment with typical multiple additions, the task was to create a new family home with work, living and play areas and to facilitate art.

The addition needed to respect the location and the original structure but also had to introduce new areas, which would be far more fluid and flexible than the traditional period stock would normally allow.

Micro Cluster Cabins in Vestfold, Norway by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter

Thursday, October 30th, 2014

Article source: Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter

The client wanted a cabin for the whole family, but at the same time it needed to be divisible in some way. The solution was a cluster of three structures, which can be used individually. Each of the buildings is defined as a clarified geometric volume, organized around the outdoor area that binds them together as one unit. Toward the northeast, a hill borders and defines the site, together with the view in the opposite direction. The spatial interaction between landscape and the structure creates a beneficial micro climate. This is reflected by the structures’ southwest orientation, where the gable end is glazed. In the other directions the buildings appear more closed.

Article source: 3biro

Bela Krajina or White Carniola is a small traditional region in southeastern part of Slovenija. It is characterised by low carst hills, beautiful birch forests, vast wineyards and beautiful contryside. There are 4 dominant architectural typologies. So called Uskoški dvor is an arrangement of single storey building sets organised around the common court. Since the client had a relatively large plot and his wish was that the whole building develops in the ground-floor, this typology seemed as a perfect starting point.
