Maximiliano Restaurant in Los Angeles by FreelandBuck (designed using Rhino and Grasshopper)

Maximiliano is an Italian restaurant and pizzeria for chef Andre Guerrero that opened in October 2011 in Los Angeles.  The 2,200 sf tenant improvement is atmospherically distinct; a unique triangular dining area infused with color and evocative of the rich and refined menu. A large mural on the large south wall creates a strong graphic and spatial identity, evoking the rhythmic yet varied shapes of Guerrero’s handmade pastas. The rhythm of embossed white stripes shifts from evenly parallel at the ceiling to randomly wavy at the seats, giving a gravitational weight to the wall and infusing the space with vibrant color and pattern. Descending over a door to the patio is a deep porous soffit that undulates over the bar, filtering natural and artificial light and housing the restaurants wine collection.  The brightly painted slats animate the space with local and varied color intensities creating 3d optical effects as the viewer moves that recall the visual instability of 1970’s Op Art.

As a development of ongoing research, architects Pablo Zamorano and Jacob Bek, and designer Nacho Marti­ in collaboration with the Emergent Technologies & Design Research Programme at the Architecutural Assoiciaiton, are exhibiting an exciting new experiment in pushing the boundaries of a highly efficient and sustainable fabrication process of a standard natural sheet material. The design manifested into an exhibition and meeting room pavilion that explores complex geometries generated by simple cut patterning in sheets.

The project of an environmental enhancer for the Nogara mare highway in Veneto (Italy) provides the unique chance to bring together ecological thinking, host interaction and active materials. Its location (an open country planar area among cultivated fields) enucleates as critical variables the impact of pollutants and the phenomenon of dazzling.

For the festival of Sukkot (Wednesday, October 12 – Wednesday, October 19) Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn has commissioned a community sukkah to be designed by Babak Bryan, AIA & Henry Grosman, Principals of B-an-G Studio and winners of 2010’s Sukkah City competition. The duo’s design Fractured Bubble, was selected as the People’s Choice Sukkah of New York City at the 2010 competition hosted by ReBoot in Union Square, NYC.

TRILUX Pavilion in San Francisco, California by Future Cities Lab (designed using Rhino, Grasshopper, and Kangaroo)

TRILUX is an experimental pavilion constructed out of three vertical wooden lattice structures. It creates an illuminated beacon anchoring the corner of the site and inviting the neighborhood to participate in the museum activities that take place inside it. TRILUX is fabricated by combining traditional steam-bending techniques with CNC milled and laser cut components. The south faces of TRILUX host hundreds of curved spiked shade quills. Visitors view the sky through three unique woven oculi and in the evening lights illuminate the interior lattices.

Species Deposit in Legazpi, Madrid by Langarita-Navarro Arquitectos (designed using AutoCAD, Rhino, and Grasshopper)

Matadero Madrid’s elevated water tower  is a singular work: a concrete structure standing 25 meters high and 14 in diameter, located on the southern edge of the new contemporary creation space. The tower, which originally was surrounded by small garden pavilions for workers at the complex, now rests on a lot that has functioned in recent years as a makeshift parking zone and a space for stock and support of artistic activities.  This earth-covered area, in which some of the plant species that inhabited the gardens still survive, will, in the near future, cover an underground transport hub and be transformed into a paved plaza providing access to the cultural facility.

Bridging the Gap by Studio BÄNG Designed using Rhino and Grasshopper

Thinking about a modular, quickly deploy- able and adaptable bridge design a quite complex shape based on parametric design strategies and digital fabrication methods was developed. We started to parametrize points in X, Y and Z direction at relevant areas of a bridge in Rhino Grasshopper. Four points at the beginning and the end of the bridge and four in the middle. These 12 parametrized points give the opportunity to steer the crosssection of the bridge at three important areas. Based on these points the defi nition creates three frames one for each end of the bridge and one in the middle.

(RE)Configured-Assemblage is a developmental landmark proposal composed of reconfigured traces of shipping containers, through diligently reconnecting, revitalising, and humanizing the accessibility of the City of Long Beach, Long Beach Blvd and Broadway Area. Through proposing three types of innovatively reconstructed modular shipping containers, the overall construct leads to open courtyards, interlocking units, and playfully generated programs that introduce a new innovative topological design that regenerates and reconnects the community.
